While some of them have the ability to at least moonlight as lead guards, the players thrived off-ball and contributed as more than just scorers. Here are six versatile guards:

A high motor athlete who excelled at getting into the lane, Murphy's slashing was actually second to his versatility as a defender. He showed the instincts off-ball to dig out the ball helper and to shoot the gap on passes. Murphy also displayed the lateral mobility and arm length to be disruptive on-ball. And once he got the steal, it was showtime in transition. Without the need for a ton of space, he applied constant pressure on the rim off-the-catch and off the muscle.

The lone junior in the starting lineup for the Wildcats, Abdurrafi earned his keep by scratching and clawing on defense. He eagerly defended some of the best opposing guards in the state, making them work for everything they got and making them cough up a few turnovers along the way. His deployment on that end counterbalanced his opportunistic role on the other. Often deferring to a talent group of seniors, Abdurrafi maximized every opportunity to rip through the defense off-the-catch. If he didn't take the spot-up three, he wasted no time getting to his 1-dribble pull-up or to the hoop.

Downing played a lot as a sophomore, but he took a big step to become the Vikings' x-factor and play-finisher as a junior. Averaging 2 three-pointers per game, he kept defenses honest by lighting them up from deep. Whether he was one pass away or relocating into an open window on the weak side, Downing was always shot-ready. Further, he made splash plays in transition too, either by getting a steal or an outlet pass and detonating at the rim. He also flashed that same explosiveness as a slasher in the halfcourt.

Wright taking the leap that he did is a major reason the Raiders improved in 10 wins from the prior season. Without being the most physically developed guard, Wright drove to the hoop using his strength and quick bursts to bump defenders out of the way and to absorb contact as he finished or passed. His toughness was evident on the other end as well. Opposing guards struggled to drive through him or push him off spots. So between points in the paint, foul drawing, and defense, Wright wore down teams as the game went on.

The new-look Vikings always had enough firepower when Jones was on the floor. Despite not getting many varsity minutes during his sophomore year, he earned all-league honors and helped lift his team to the second round of the tournament. Jones was good for 2 to 3 triples every game and delivered huge shots in the clutch. As soon as he crossed halfcourt, the junior sniper was in-range for standstill and/or movement threes. Hard closeouts didn't work either, because Jones could counter with a quick step in any direction for a pull-up.

Jones's rim attempts and on-ball defense were the secret ingredient in AI's turnaround season. His craft as a ball-handler is as good as it gets in-state. He drilled his fair share of threes too, but his insistence on cooking his man off the bounce and getting to the baja balanced out their shotmaking from distance. The energy he brought on defense fueled the Tigers in critical moments. Even when he didn't directly force a turnover, his ball-pressure sped teams up and kept them out of sync.
