Polk County has always been known for its football pedigree, but this past season made one thing clear — the basketball scene deserves real attention too. From deep playoff runs to rising young talent across multiple programs, the area continues to produce competitive teams and college-level prospects that are starting to turn heads statewide.

Bartow (24-6) | Class 6A

Bartow had another strong season, finishing 24-6 and winning a district championship after taking down Lakeland twice late in the year. The Yellow Jackets leaned on toughness, guard play, and experience, consistently winning close games. Their postseason run showed resilience, though it ended against a talented Evans squad. This is one of the top programs with young depth to keep eyes on next year. Sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='2804162' first='Derwyn' last='Link'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2527379' first='James' last='Ratteree'] are both highly ranked in the state with many more developing on the roster. Bartow's identity stayed consistent all year — defend, execute, and rely on disciplined guard play. They remain one of the most reliable programs in Polk County year after year.

Victory Christian (25-7) | Class 1A

Victory Christian battled through another competitive season and proved once again they can compete deep into the postseason. The Knights made a strong run all the way to the state championship game before falling to Sagemont, finishing as state runner-up. This group leaned heavily on balance and experience, with multiple players stepping up in key moments.

[player_tooltip player_id='2810621' first='Christian' last='Fuller'] continued his rise as a reliable two-way guard, while [player_tooltip player_id='1633075' first='Tucker' last='Fox'] provided consistent perimeter shooting that stretched defenses. In the frontcourt, [player_tooltip player_id='2299674' first='Thok' last='Gol']'s development gave them a versatile presence, and [player_tooltip player_id='2800185' first='MJ' last='McCalla'] handled the physical work inside.

Even with key seniors moving on, Victory Christian has built a foundation that should carry over. Fuller headlines a returning group that understands winning basketball, and the expectation is this program stays right in the mix next season.

Santa Fe Catholic (23-8) | Class 2A

Santa Fe Catholic put together another strong, disciplined season, continuing their trend as one of the more consistent programs in the area. The Hawks made another deep postseason push, reaching the state semifinals and reinforcing their reputation as a tough out every year.

[player_tooltip player_id='2884444' first='Toby' last='Lane'] once again set the tone as the leader and floor general, guiding the offense while impacting the game on both ends. [player_tooltip player_id='2827196' first='Shannon' last='McArthur'] brought physicality and effort in the frontcourt, while [player_tooltip player_id='3557212' first='Urijah' last='Newkirk'] continued to provide scoring punch when needed.

With Lane graduating, there's production to replace—but the culture and structure remain. Younger pieces like McArthur give this group something to build on, and Santa Fe should remain competitive as they retool heading into next season.

Lakeland (19-8) | Class 6A

Lakeland put together a solid 19-8 season, showing flashes of what could be a very interesting next step for the program. While the Dreadnaughts took some bumps against top competition, the year was more about growth — and they got plenty of it from a young core that was thrown into real minutes.

Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='2767801' first='Armani' last='Morris'] showed early signs of being a difference-maker, playing with confidence and not backing down from bigger moments. Sophomores Tyson McElhaney and Corey Swanson also had stretches where their potential popped, giving Lakeland multiple pieces to build around moving forward.

With another offseason of development and experience under their belt, this is a group that should take a noticeable jump. The foundation is there — now it's about consistency, strength, and turning those flashes into production. Don't be surprised if Lakeland looks a lot more complete next season.

Ridge Community (16-7) | Class 6A

Ridge Community followed up a strong start with a solid overall season, proving they belong in the conversation across Polk County. The Bolts stayed competitive throughout district play and carried that momentum into the postseason before running into a tough matchup.

Curtis Walton led the way as a consistent scoring option, bringing physicality and leadership, while Zach Joseph and [player_tooltip player_id='2201942' first='Amare' last='Walker'] added balance to the lineup. This was a team that didn't rely on one piece—they played through structure and execution. Looking ahead, Ridge has an opportunity to take another step. With key contributors returning and more experience under their belt, this is a program that could push even higher in the county rankings next season.

Discovery (18-8) | Class 3A

Discovery continued to trend upward this season, showing flashes of a team capable of competing with some of the better programs in the area. The Spartans stayed competitive in a tough schedule and carried that into the postseason with a solid showing.

[player_tooltip player_id='2803761' first='Turral' last='Berry'] remained the offensive engine, consistently putting pressure on defenses with his scoring ability. Jaucoby Torrence, Darrick Downing, and Omari Vega each played important roles, giving Discovery a balanced attack that could hurt teams in different ways.

The biggest takeaway—this program is close. With Berry setting the tone and a core that's gained valuable experience, Discovery has the pieces to make a bigger jump next season if they continue developing and tighten up defensively.
