We recently updated our 2028 class rankings, looking at 70 of the top sophomores in the state of Virginia. Here's a look at part one of the top point and combo guards in the class.

25) [player_tooltip player_id='2918974' first='J.J.' last='Colon'] | 6'0” CG | Cosby (#42 Overall)

Colon had a good freshman year at Cosby, and has continued to ascend as one of the top guards in the Chesterfield area to watch for over the next few years. The 6'0” combo can fill it up in bunches and make tough shots from multiple levels, he's very good in ball screens and makes great reads against rotations, and he controls the game as far as tempo and taking care of the ball.

24) [player_tooltip player_id='2918960' first='Malachi' last='Lee'] | 6'2” CG | Westfield (#41 Overall)

Lee would likely be higher on this list if he wasn't a nationally recognized football recruit already, yet at the same time he's a big impact on the basketball court too. The 6'2” combo really shines defensively with his athleticism and ability to move his feet, he is an aggressive downhill attacker who can use his length to finish through traffic, and he is a very good rebounder for his position as well.

23) Marshall Scarborough | 6'0” CG | Gillion Academy (#40 Overall)

While Gillion has a plethora of nationally ranked recruits that play the majority of the minutes, Scarborough has shown that he'll be one of their future building blocks when all of them move on next year. The 6'0” combo has a great frame and is likely still growing which will make him even more athletic, he can handle the rock in isolation and in ball screens to create shots for himself and others, and he can move off the ball where he's a knock down shooter as well.

22) [player_tooltip player_id='3336930' first='Jordan' last='Smith'] | 6'0” CG | Robinson #38 Overall)

Smith may share the same name as the PVI senior who is considered perhaps the best player in the country, but he's making noise himself this season with Robinson where he's been putting up huge numbers. The 6'0” combo guard is a deadly shooter from deep with effortless range, he can create space and has good footwork to get into his shot, he uses fakes and relocates well on hard closeouts, and he is a crafty finisher and gets to the line often too.

21) [player_tooltip player_id='2918953' first='Marc' last='Johnson'] | 6'0” CG | Lake Taylor (#37 Overall)

Johnson is still somewhat waiting his turn with a plethora of older and more experienced guards over him, but he's shown flashes that he'll be the future for the Titans as he continues to develop. The 6'0” combo guard is hard to keep off the court as he's a threat to score both on and off the ball, he shoots a great ball off the catch and knocks down shots from deep at a good rate, he's a high IQ and unselfish playmaker, and he plays really hard on both ends of the floor.

20) [player_tooltip player_id='2918948' first='Damaries' last='Harris'] | 5'10” PG | EC Glass (#36 Overall)

Harris is emerging as the next guard out of an EC Glass program that has produced many good ones, and after a good freshman year he's continuing to show that as a sophomore too. The 5'10” guard is lightning quick and super shifty off the bounce to get downhill, he can knock it down from deep on the move when he's off the ball, he gets under ball handlers and makes them uncomfortable, and he can make plays for others as well.

19) [player_tooltip player_id='2194771' first='Carter' last='Brooks'] | 6'1” CG | Westfield (#35 Overall)

Brooks is an uber talented young guard who is dealing with the same thing of playing behind a deep and experienced backcourt, but when he gets his chance he'll be one of the best young guards in the NOVA area. The 6'1” combo is an athletic guard who can get downhill and thrives pushing the rock in transition, he's a good finisher around the rim and in traffic, he can knock down shots from deep and in the midrange, and he has huge upside on the defensive end.

18) [player_tooltip player_id='2609427' first='Landon' last='Scott'] | 6'1” CG | St. Stephen's St. Agnes (#34 Overall)

Scott has done a great job in his role with SSSAS so far this season, and he's a guy who will get more attention when he gets his chance to play more in the upcoming seasons. He's a skilled and smart guard who can control the tempo and makes great reads both in the open floor and in the half court, he picks his spots and scores it well from deep and in the midrange, he can pressure the ball and is a great help side defender, and his willingness to take less of a role is great to see from a young lead guard.

17) [player_tooltip player_id='2918943' first='Linney' last='Reed'] | 5'10” PG | Stuart Hall (#33 Overall)

Reed was a big part of Stuart Hall's run to the VISAA D-IV state championship last year, and he's shown that he's a guard to keep an eye on moving forward. Reed is a fearless leader who doesn't back down from matchups with older and more touted guards, he is lightning quick off the bounce and is able to get in the paint to make plays for himself and others, he's a good shooter from deep, and he's a relentless on ball defender too.

16) [player_tooltip player_id='2966230' first='Devan' last='Howe'] | 6'0” PG | Gainesville (#32 Overall)

Howe has been fantastic for Gainesville this season, as they're a talented group where he runs the show and is the straw that stirs the drink for them. The 6'0” lead guard controls the game as he knows when to push and when to slow the pace down, he changes speeds well and is shifty off the bounce to keep defenders off balance, he has a great IQ and good vision as a playmaker, and he picks his spots and scores it efficiently from all over off the bounce.
