On Wednesday, January 21st I attended the 6A battle with the two top teams in the state. As #4 nationally ranked Sunnyslope hosted #6 nationally ranked Millennium. The game definitely lived up to the hype as they battled to the end with the home team prevailing 61-57.

Here were some of the standouts in the game

[player_tooltip player_id='1574517' first='Jaylin' last='Ideran'] Sunnyslope (Pictured)

One of the stars of the night came in fairly early with Portela in foul trouble and had to stay in when Prescott III got injured and shined. He will hit the three off the catch in rhythm and ball fake and drive to the basket to score going baseline. He made a couple tough rebounds when it mattered, found some teammates for assists and he had two huge blocks. He finished with 14 big points off the bench.

[player_tooltip player_id='1555179' first='Darius' last='Wabbington'] Sunnyslope

The true mismatch of the night was Wabbington. He gobbled up every rebound possible with his strong two hands and sheer size. He scored it every way with rip thrus with either hand using a little burst, he uses a drop step into a reverse layup, hook shots, mid-range jumpers, threes and dunks in traffic. He scored 20 points with 14 rebounds impressively.

[player_tooltip player_id='1482165' first='Rider' last='Portela'] Sunnyslope

One of the premier two-way players in the AIA defended multiple positions and took charges plus collected steals and grabbed rebounds in his area. He scores with three off the catch or pull with deep range and more confidence, he will glide in the air with contact and he made two clutch free throws down the stretch. He scored 18 points including four 3's.

[player_tooltip player_id='1555180' first='Delton' last='Prescott III'] Sunnyslope

Prescott III was a little quiet to start the game but had an important stretch that turned in the Vikings favor. He scored with and-1's in traffic with great patience in the post and he has an almost automatic mid-range jumper he loves to use. He will facilitate and is quick on the ball defensively. He scored 6 points with his limited minutes as he ended potentially breaking a bone in his off hand near his thumb.

[player_tooltip player_id='1482163' first='Cristian' last='Simmons'] Sunnyslope

A versatile face-up forward only scored two points but made his money on the defensive side of the court. He rebounds well in his area and defended well in this game. He defended bigger forwards, guards and wings slowing down his opponents all night.

[player_tooltip player_id='1546987' first='Adan' last='Diggs'] Millennium

One of the top guards in the state is another two-way player. He uses his length, size and lateral quickness to slow down his opponents and collected four steals in the process. He scores it every way with deep threes, runners with either hand, tough and-1's shots in traffic with contact, he will rise up and elevate over the top of the defense and finish off alley-oop dunks. He scored a team high 19 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1150822' first='Cameron' last='Holmes'] Millennium

One of the top two-way players in the AIA is another who slows down his opponents nightly. He moves well and he is super strong to keep the opposition in front of him and will rebound and block shots. The lefty scores it with mid-range pull-ups in rhythm, reverse layups with some nice English on the ball, super deep threes and high flying dunks way above the rim. He scored 17 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2370259' first='Terry' last='McKinney III'] Millennium

A hyper athletic wing forward who can play and defend multiple positions for the talented West Valley team. He will score with way above the rim dunks, he will ball fake into a layup and he is a quick second jumper to score with offensive rebound put backs. He also has a polished floater game he uses over the bigs. He scored 8 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2039513' first='DJ' last='Spencer'] Millennium

A tough forward southpaw is very strong and skilled. He will get downhill using his left hand, score with back door layups and often earns trips to the free throw line. He is a smart passer and a plus rebounder in his area using his physicality. He scored 7 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1555181' first='Adrian' last='Higuera'] Millennium

A quick scoring point guard can set the table but likes to score it. He will pull-up from mid-range, which is clearly his sweet spot using high elevation, and he will speed dribble drive with either hand to the basket. He will collect steals and grab rebounds in his area. He scored 6 points.
