Wednesday was championship day for the Private School Classic taking place on the campus of the Houston Second Baptist School. Bracket play was concluding, and several chances were made for athletes to leave it all out on the floor leading up to the weekend. I was able to watch some of the chamionship games on Wednesday morning/afternoon and see some new faces I hadn't been able to watch this season yet...here are some guys who stood out to me for the tournament's top performers on Wednesday!

Rashard was the first combo guard I was impressed by in the Kinkaid School's win over the Village School during Wednesday's round of games. Lewis helped stretch the floor for the Falcons with his high IQ decision making, shooting, and impressive ballhandling. Lewis had several trips to the free throw line as well where he was able to draw contact and cash in at the charity stripe with impressive poise in the clutch. Look for him to function this year as a major combo guard for Kinkaid and help get buckets in the clutch!

Dan Mangala was a total mismatch for anyone of the opposition in Westbury Christian's consolation championship win over Legacy SSS and had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Mangala uses his size and height to finish over defenders with ease, get to the basket off the pick and roll, and even helps handle the ball in crunch time. Mangala protects the paint with good post defense and knows how to not bite on pump fakes and stay out of foul trouble. He also showed me that he has a bit of a smooth jumpshot and uses it when he can't get to the rim. This will be a big year for Dan if he continues this type of play!

In his second season at Second Baptist, Shia has showcased great athleticism and ability to score efficiently in key situations under pressure. Francis uses great leaping ability and strength to finish through contact at the rim and can shoot off the dribble if he is left the slightest bit of open room. He is explosive off the dribble and also can function as a lob threat if the backdoor cut is open. His physical defense on the perimeter sets the tone for his team and continues to produce turnovers at a high level. Shia continues to impress on the big stages of high school basketball.

Maverick played the role of a combo guard and wing in Kinkaid's bracket win over Village on Wednesday. I was impressed by his ability to draw fouls in the paint and also his hustle for loose balls, as well as second chance rebounds for easy points. With his height and wingspan, this allows him to see the court over defenders and score from all three levels throughout the game. He helps handle the ball under full court pressure and also knows when to push the tempo and when to slow the game down. I first watched Maverick this summer with the Gulf Coast Blue Chips, and I knew immediately that he had a high ceiling and that he will only continue to get better throughout his high school career.
