The Hays Hawks Christmas Tournament once again delivered high-level guard play. From proven leaders to emerging young playmakers, the floor was filled with guards who controlled tempo, made winning plays, and impacted games on both ends. Here are several backcourt standouts who consistently separated themselves during the event.    Jerrells has taken a noticeable step forward since the summer, and his maturation is evident. Now embracing a larger leadership role, the versatile combo guard impacts the game in a variety of ways beyond the box score. He rebounds in traffic, defends bigger players, and consistently makes the “in-between” plays that winning teams rely on. Offensively, Jerrells is a dynamic weapon. His explosive first step and athleticism allow him to score above the rim, while his improved midrange and perimeter shooting have added real balance to his attack. His three-point shot is now a legitimate threat, making his shot fakes far more effective and opening up driving lanes for himself and others. His decision-making has also improved, as he moves the ball when needed and relocates to create space. Jerrells' growth is right on schedule and should be a major factor as the Hawks make a strong district push.     McGowan is the engine that powers a very strong Houston Christian team. A tough, physical combo guard, his impact begins on the defensive end, where his quickness, active hands, and competitive edge create constant disruption. He pressures the ball relentlessly and turns stops into momentum-changing opportunities. Offensively, McGowan is difficult to contain. He owns a quick first step, scores effectively off the bounce, finishes through contact, and knocks down the three at an efficient clip, forcing defenders to pick their poison. His motor never stops, and that consistent energy permeates the entire lineup. Houston Christian impressed across the board, and McGowan remains a clear cornerstone of a well-built and well-coached program.     McNair is a steady hand at the wheel for a quality Westwood program. A true point guard by nature, he sets the tone with his poise and decision-making but has no issue shouldering the scoring load when needed. His offensive game is efficient and completely capable of scoring at all three levels with a reliable pull-up jumper, a dependable three-ball, and the strength to finish through contact at the rim. What really stands out is McNair's feel for the game. Defensively, he's disciplined and intelligent, reading tendencies, disrupting passing lanes, and turning defense into offense. He rebounds well for his size and consistently pushes the pace in transition. With a rugged district race ahead, Westwood will lean heavily on McNair's leadership and consistency as they position themselves for a playoff push.     Hill provides an immediate spark off the bench for Westwood and looks well beyond his years. A lightning-quick young point guard, his speed alone changes the pace of the game when he checks in. He gets past defenders with ease, finishes well in traffic, and shows confidence knocking down the three and pulling up in the midrange. Defensively, Hill is especially impressive applying strong on-ball pressure, forcing turnovers, and converting defense into fast-break opportunities. While his long-term future at Westwood is extremely bright, Hill is already making meaningful contributions and will continue to be an impactful piece throughout the remainder of the season.     Novy is a dependable, all-around guard who does a little bit of everything well. His quick first step allows him to get into scoring spots with ease, and his shooting touch, especially from beyond the arc, keeps defenses honest. He's not shy about attacking the paint and finishing through contact when the opportunity presents itself. Defensively, Novy brings consistent pressure, whether in man-to-man, zone, or press situations. He's also a strong rebounding guard who looks to push the tempo and initiate transition offense. With Regents poised for a promising season under new head coach Brad Styles, Novy figures to be a focal point and a steady presence as the team continues to find its stride.
