is off the board. The sharp shooting 6-foot-1 guard from Southridge recently made his college decision by signing with Bushnell, putting the wraps on his college recruitment while finishing up his senior season. It was a decision that was well thought out, looking at factors both on and off the basketball floor before eventually deciding the Beacons were the best fit for him.
"First time I visited, I loved the small school feel," Groenig said. "It doesn't really have a campus but is basically on the U of O campus which I thought was pretty cool and you get the big college vibe from it. I love the coaching staff - Eddie and Jordan (Alexander) have been really easy to talk to and I went to a practice and loved how they practiced."
"I love the class sizes and them actually having the major I want to go in," Groenig continued. "The program is Christ-centered and I also love that."
In addition to the school and the culture, there's no question he felt a good fit on the basketball side of thing as well. "The coaching staff loves the 3 ball so fits me really well," Groenig said. "And then they like to push tempo which we at Southridge have been doing that my whole high school career."
Groenig made his choice of Bushnell over other opportunities at Northwest (Wash.), George Fox, and others. With his decision in the books he now fully turns his attention to finishing off his high school career with a bang. Through 12 games he's helped the Skyhawks solidify themselves as a Top Five team in 6A, recently making the semifinals of the Les Schwab Invitational and looking forward to a repeat Metro League title and more.
"I think individually I have had my ups and downs in this preseason - playing the toughest schedule in the state can do that," Groenig said. "As a team we have battled and are definitely battle tested. I feel like we are playing really well but not yet our best basketball which is good. I think we have a legit chance at the state title if we rebound - the biggest thing is rebounding and defense for us as were still pretty undersized especially at the guard position. But our offense so far this year is outstanding."
Our congratulations go out to Groenig and his family on his decision. He currently ranks as the #18 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2026 rankings.
