The Fernley Vaqueros are looking like serious 3A State Championship contenders after an impressive showing at The Legacy Tip-Off Classic.

I watched their first game of the tournament against Rancho, and their pace, skill, and size immediately caught my attention.

Senior guards [player_tooltip player_id='1768793' first='Bryce' last='Stephens'], [player_tooltip player_id='2356155' first='Sheldon' last='Jacobson'], and Nolan Berreman all play with poise and consistently look for the best shot possible.

Stephens and Jacobson played at a very high level on both ends, which helped Fernley build a sizable lead.

Three of their core players: Drew Peterson, Leeland Ketelaar, and Body Parsons are also 6'4 or taller, giving them an advantage on the boards and they clogged up the paint.

The final score of their matchup against the Rancho Rams was 71-51.

They then played Faith Lutheran next, and their strong guards once again brought their A-game. Stephens was hitting tough shots, and Jacobson notably threw down a vicious dunk that swung momentum their way.

Credit to the Crusaders, who kept battling despite falling into a hole.

In the end, Fernley pulled it out, 50-44.

Fernley also won their third game against Sierra Vista, 59-51, before falling to Mojave in overtime in the championship.

Although they didn't take home the championship trophy, there's no doubt that they'll be an exciting team to follow the rest of the season.

[player_tooltip player_id='2356155' first='Sheldon' last='Jacobson'] was a swiss army knife for Vaqueros win at the Legacy Tip-Off Classic. On offense, handled the ball, splashed in shots from beyond the arc., and had some very good takes to the cup (Including the monster dunk). While on defense, Jacobson was always on the move and looking to make his opponents uncomfortable. Causing more than a few turnovers. Overall, it was awesome to see the Oregon Tech commit perform as well as he did and I'm sure he'll lead Fernley to many more wins this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1768793' first='Bryce' last='Stephens'] was also contributing in a variety of ways for Fernley. He was tasked with both facilitating and scoring. And you can tell that he knows to kick it to his fellow shooters if he feels the defense closing in on him. On the other end of the court, Stephens utilized his motor and quickness to apply good ball pressure and to gather steals. Expect him to continue to stuff the stat sheet this year.

Leeland Ketelaar made an impact with his height, footwork, and anticipation skills. As a defender, he leverages his length to disrupt and block shots. Offensively, he can operate in the paint and score by shooting over defenders or by patiently waiting for the right moment to finish. On top of that, he rebounds well and gives good effort.

Nolan Berreman gives the Vaqueros even more shooting. He can pour in shots from 3 point land if left open. And he also uses his IQ to make the right passes when moving the ball around. Defensively, Berreman hustles and competes hard. With his steady presence on both ends, he's a key piece in Fernley's balanced attack.

[player_tooltip player_id='2807101' first='Bodie' last='Parsons'] is the type of player who will do whatever needs to be done. He battles hard for rebounds in the paint and uses his frame well to hold his ground defensively. On offense, he's capable of scoring second-chance points, and he knows how to establish inside position when the opportunity comes.

Andrew Peterson is another Fernley player I liked. Standing at 6'4, he uses his size to alter shots on defense. On offense, he stretches the floor with his 3-point shot. Look for him to be a consistent contributor for them this season.
