It's a decision made every year in football, but not seen as often in basketball.
Low numbers forcing the cancelation of a season.
Plainfield Tri-County ran into this situation for boys' basketball a few years ago and opted to play just a junior varsity schedule. The Penguins now have a varsity and JV squad and are competitive again in the Central Wisconsin East Conference.
Winter High School, enrollment 64, found itself in a similar situation for the 2025-25 campaign.
With just eight players out, administrators from Winter made the difficult decision earlier this week to cancel most of its varsity games, including all of its games in the Lakeland East Conference.
"I do think it's in the best interest of our team and players, but it was not an easy decision," Winter coach Shawna White said. "Our community loves its basketball so it was a difficult decision. Our basketball teams provide an identity for our school and city."
Of the eight players who are playing basketball at Winter, six are underclassmen. Five seniors graduated off of last year's squad and all five started on that 2-23 squad.

"It came down to numbers but also experience," White said. "We have some kids with very little experience playing basketball. I am hopeful, though, that we will be back as a varsity team next season."
The Warriors will play mostly a JV schedule this season with between 10-15 games at that level. They also will play four varsity games, two against Cornell and one each against Lac Courte Oreilles and Butternut. Winter will not play in the WIAA Tournament.
