November is here — college hoops are tipping off, the NBA is in full swing, and the high school football playoffs are nearing their dramatic finish. That can only mean one thing: high school basketball season is almost upon us! Gyms will soon fill with the sound of whistles, squeaking sneakers, and preseason anticipation. And in Scotland and Menno, there's a buzz in the air as the Trappers gear up for Year Two of their co-op, eager to hit the floor and start building on last season's foundation.

A new era of Trapper basketball began last winter as Scotland and Menno officially combined forces for their first season as a co-op. As expected, Year One came with plenty of challenges. Head coach William Massey acknowledged the natural growing pains of merging two programs into one unified team — chemistry had to be built from scratch, roles defined, and a new system learned.

While the final record of 4–17 didn't turn heads, it didn't reflect how competitive the Trappers truly were. Scotland–Menno pushed several opponents to the brink, suffered multiple single-digit losses, and dropped two overtime games — including a heartbreaking postseason battle with MVP. More importantly, a foundation was built. The group found its identity, learned how to play together, and proved they could compete.

Now, entering Year Two, the tone around the program is different — energized, confident, and hungry. The Trappers return a seasoned core of juniors and seniors who gained critical experience last season, particularly in the second half of the schedule. That continuity alone raises expectations, but the biggest boost comes with the return of a serious post presence [player_tooltip player_id='3044062' first='Hunter' last='Yosten'], who missed last year with a torn ACL. His strength, inside scoring, rebounding, and interior defense, adds a dynamic that the Trappers lacked a season ago. Yosten is listed on the football roster as 6'2", 250 pounds, so he will be a load to handle in the paint.

William Massey believes this group has the talent, maturity, and chemistry to make a significant leap. He describes a locker room that's more connected, more vocal, and ready to compete. If Scotland–Menno stays healthy, the Trappers have the pieces to make noise in Region 5 — and potentially write a defining early chapter in the history of this young co-op.

With more familiarity, the Trappers also expect to show off a clearer on-court identity. Look for Scotland–Menno to play with tempo, lean into its length and athleticism on the defensive end, and use Yosten's presence inside to open up the perimeter for returning guards. The combination of experience, size, and improved chemistry gives this squad the versatility to win in multiple ways — a major shift from last season's learning curve.

Coach Massey expects this year's group to be more well-rounded on both ends of the floor. The Trappers will feature a balanced attack — a mix of guard play and perimeter shooting paired with size and rebounding in the post. Depth should also be a strength, as several younger athletes are ready to compete for minutes and push the upperclassmen in practice, raising the overall level of the team.
