could have received all sorts of recruiting attention during this upcoming year - heck, the offers were starting to pile up early. But the versatile 6-foot-7 swingman felt no need to wait. On Tuesday he announced that he was committed to the admissions process and the roster spot offered to him at Middlebury College in Vermont, and it's a decision he knew was the right fit for him.
"The first big part for me was the academics," Kettering said. "Really prestigious academic school and they also play in a very competitive league, and when I visited a really loved the coaches and how their practice was run - super high energy and competitive. The guys were also super nice and I heard only good things, and the campus was super beautiful."
There was no question Middlebury matched everything the high-academic performer wanted in a college. But the fit on the basketball floor was important to him as well and he's excited about what he can bring to the table to the Panthers program.
"One specific thing I really liked was how they stat their practices so you can see how the way you perform in practice affects your minutes," Kettering said. "I think I will definitely be a threat with my shooting ability at my size being able to space the floor and play inside out, being able to get my shot off."
Especially as we've seen in the Pacific Northwest, college decisions to D-III schools (of which Middlebury competes in the extremely competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference - NESCAC) aren't typically made before one's senior season. Kettering explained why he felt an early commitment was necessary.
"Couple reasons," Kettering said. "Making a decision now takes a lot of pressure of my senior season and will help me focus on just winning games. Also it helps the Middlebury coaches create a more well rounded recruiting class knowing that they have my position filled and can look for other spots they also need. I also thought Middlebury was a great opportunity for me and that I might was well lock it in now."
With his college future secured, Kettering now turns his attention to the season ahead with the Storm - one where he feels Summit has the potential to do the same thing it's done the past few seasons.
"I think we could be very successful!" Kettering exclaimed. "I'm wishing for the best for our team and think we can make it back to the state chip if we keep working hard and gelling as a team. I just hope I can impact winning in any way I can as best as possible. I want our team to win games and hopefully championships."
