On Thursday, August 7th, I attended the KB3 Elite/Gold Standard summer draft league elite division semifinals. The first game featured the Playmakers against Beast Squad, and the second game featured the Shamrocks vs. Team Juice.

There was a good amount of talent on the floor and a really awesome summer league environment. Below are the second best five performances I saw.

Olson is a super versatile athlete on both ends of the floor. The 6-foot-1 combo guard is able to handle the ball and start offense for his team — he has really solid vision and live dribble passing ability with both hands — but he can also get to the rim and score. Defensively, he competes incredibly hard and is able to guard all positions as a result of his size and strength. The rising sophomore at Lawrence Academy definitely takes some questionable shots, but I could see him getting some minutes for his squad this upcoming season, especially if he settles into a ball-mover role.

Cook was one of the best defenders I saw on Thursday night. The 5-foot-8 guard is super quick laterally and uses his hands like prime Gary Payton, consistently getting deflections and messing up the offensive flow of his opponents in both the half court and for 94 feet. Offensively, he wasn't too aggressive but picked his spots well and showed a really nice looking floater game in the lane when the bigs came over to help. Size will be a limiting factor for him, but the rising freshman should make waves at whatever high school program he plays for next season (he's homeschooled right now).

Maturah is as solid as they come. In a summer league where many players are trying to do things outside of their skillset, the rising sophomore is content to make the right play again and again, never trying to do too much. He's only 6-foot, but he's very long and uses his athleticism to guard a variety of players defensively; he's strong enough to guard bigs and quick enough to guard guards. Offensively, he has no weakness and is able to do everything on the court, which makes him an awesome plug and play guy. I'll be curious to see whether Maturah can crack the rotation at Brooks this season.

Padilla is a 5-foot-9 southpaw guard who's able to get downhill going left no matter how hard you try to stop him. He gets so low and has such an active off hand that he's able to turn the corner easily, and he has solid quickness and strength to keep his line once he gets a step on his defender. He can also shoot it from three and makes solid reads out of the pick and roll and in transition. The rising sophomore is part of a rebuilding Newton North squad that he should be able to get minutes on this season, and his older brother (Jose) was a star there and now plays at Ithaca College.

Singh really impressed me with his feel and offensive skillset. The 5-foot-10 guard is only a rising freshman, but he was able to handle the ball against a pressure-filled defense for 40 minutes, and with lots of confidence. In the half court, he's able to get to his spots in the mid range and elevate for pull ups, but he also makes great reads at the nail and in the paint when the help comes. He's going to Catholic Memorial this coming season and will be in an awesome spot to continue developing his guard skills and IQ. I'll be curious to see how much he continues to grow in the coming years, which will be huge for his eventual recruitment.
