Senior Guards Drawing Eyes at East Coast Invitational

This week we checked in at the East Coast Invitational team camp in Jacksonville, NC to watch some of the top high school teams from the east take the stage. Here's a look at some of the guards that played well under our watch.    The new point guard on the South Meck High School squad will be a key contributor once basketball season rolls around. He does a good job of controlling the pace of the offense while still being a threat to score rather with or without the ball in his hands. His top performance that I saw was against New Hanover where he dished out a team high 7 assists.     Another face in a new uniform was a steady contributor for his new squad all weekend. He was tasked with running the show offensively and the senior point guard was the guy who stepped up when his team needed a big shot down the stretch of a few games. Farmville Central walked away with a championship for their team's effort and Moye was a big piece of that result.     Washington clinched a spot in the championship game on Sunday after a back and forth battle with defending 3A champ Ben L. Smith. In the contest, Chaise finished with 33 points and 8 assists and showed a solid ability of being able to score while effectively getting his teammates involved. He got to the paint almost at will finishing a good amount of shots at the rim.     Not many guard prospects did more for their respective teams than Jay Hamilton from Richmond. In the championship game, I watched he was the leader in 4 of the 5 major stat categories. He's a solid built guard who excels in getting to the the paint where he can finish or dish to teammates. Richmond was another team that left Sunday afternoon with a championship to show for his efforts.     First flight has one of the more fun offenses there is to watch in the NC basketball landscape. This year's rendition will be led by senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='2175564' first='Brayden' last='Johnson']. Johnson stands about 6'2 with wide shoulders, solid athleticism, and an uncanny ability to get to the rim and finish with relative ease. In the semi-final game against Laney, he hit a move went baseline, and threw down a nice two hand dunk.     The champions and only team to go undefeated throughout the event Independence was led by (my MVP choice) senior guard Dylan McFarland. Farland was all over the floor, defensively wreaking havoc with steals turning them into transition opportunities while offensively he knocked down multiple tough shots over the weekend.       Bell continued where he finished his junior season, putting the ball in the basket at a high rate. He averaged just under 25 points per game over the event and was hitting shots off the dribble and catch at a high rate. The short handed West Carteret squad didn't finish how they wanted but expect them to be better when November rolls around.
