My HS intern [player_tooltip player_id='2716510' first='Spencer' last='Goldberg'] is back at it again with his second article for the Prep Hoops Arizona website. He gives his insight and thoughts here as summer HS ‘June ball' kicked off this week:

I (Spencer) attended the Central Varsity Jamboree tonight (5/31) and was able to watch some games on day two of the event.

Here were some of the standouts that impressed me:

[player_tooltip player_id='2407206' first='Cameron' last='Hurt'] Pinnacle (Pictured)

This standout guard was an absolute pleasure to watch. His control of the game is elite, and his pace is next level. He kept Pinnacle in the lead for most of this game. Cameron got buckets in numerous ways, whether it was in transition off a steal or the flow of the team's offensive sets, where he was able to get to his spots. He does a nice job keeping his teammates involved by getting them good looks at the basket. All of these efforts helped Pinnacle beat a strong Cactus Shadows team by 4 points. Cam ended the game with 13 points and four assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='2133646' first='Myles' last='Godfrey'] Cactus Shadows

Another standout guard who is a pleasure to watch as well. Myles is one of the quickest guards in his class (both offensively and defensively), with one of the tightest handles. He does an outstanding job rebounding out of the guard position; whenever he gets a rebound, his eyes are always up, scanning the floor, and he can push head. He can beat his man one-on-one off the dribble, get downhill quickly, and always seems to make the right read. He is also a skilled defender, able to anticipate his opponents' offensive moves. Myles led the way for Cactus Shadows in this one with 16 points in a variety of ways, four rebounds, and three steals.

[player_tooltip player_id='1986845' first='Mason' last='Kendrick'] Arcadia

Mason is emerging as a standout basketball player and a vocal leader heading into his senior season (4-year varsity player), setting the tone for his team. He has one of the highest motors and always brings high energy. He has one of the best mid-range games in his class and gets his offense going from there. Mason is constantly attacking downhill and will finish through contact with his strong frame. He can also stop on a dime and pull up, usually raising above his defender as he gets exceptional lift on his pull-up jumpers. He rebounds the glass hard and looks to push the ball. Mason finished the game with 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Helping Arcadia beat a crafty Verrado team.

[player_tooltip player_id='1591737' first='Daniel' last='Garza'] Willow Canyon

Daniel is a true point guard; he has a firm handle on the ball and will make wise decisions. Although he sometimes plays off the ball, he still moves well and can play either position. Daniel can knock the three ball down at a high rate. He knows when to cut from the weak side to get easy layups. He also sets solid screens for his teammates to get them open. Willow Canyon dropped a tough one to a reloaded Central team.

[player_tooltip player_id='1759332' first='Dom' last='Rojas'] Central

Dom is one of those players who gets you excited to watch. He does precisely what all coaches talk about: the little things. If you need him to take a charge, play full-court defense, and get on the ground for loose balls, he will do all of that and more. He has also gotten a more consistent offensive game. While he is still adjusting to the transition, he has also significantly reduced his turnovers. He can hit his three-pointers at a more consistent rate, too. He hit four threes in Central's win against Willow Canyon. His 17 points boosted Central. His defense was impressive, as he guarded one of the best rising sophomores in Arizona. All of his efforts contributed to Central's win.

[player_tooltip player_id='1150901' first='John' last='Mattingly'] Central

John just follows up an elite performance with another elite game. He is going to boost his stock even more within the next couple of weeks. He is one of the most fundamental players I have seen. He plays the game at his speed, and it works. Besides scoring the ball, John is always cutting and making the right basketball play to get to his spots, whether he recognizes a mismatch and posts up, or cuts from the weak side. John ended this game with 24 points and scored from all over the floor. He also had four rebounds and four assists. These efforts helped lead Central to a win over Willow Canyon.
