Big Shots came to Richmond with Paul Biancardi at the Henrico Sports Complex, bringing with them some of the top teams from across VA and the entire east coast. With so much talent in the building, we'll take a look over the next few days of some of the best players from the event. Here's a look at some of the 17U wing standouts from VA.

[player_tooltip player_id='1767550' first='Andrew' last='Maria'] | 6'5” WG | Washington Warriors

It was the second very impressive showing for Maria in the early AAU season, as he's looking like one of the more underrated late bloomer prospects in the DMV. The 6'5” off guard showed his entire package as he made plays on the ball, made shots from multiple levels and showed his athleticism on both ends of the floor. He showed craftiness and a good IQ to create space and use fakes to get looks at the rim, he made the right decisions consistently and he was very efficient as he picked his spots and scored it in different ways.

Steph Cherry | 6'5” WG | Team Loaded South

Cherry is coming off a great junior season with Hopewell, and looks like he'll be another late bloomer of a prospects, particularly if he takes another year to continue to develop. He's a very talented player who showed a lot of different ways to impact the game, as at times he was aggressive looking for his shot and at times he deferred and made his impact on the defensive end. He showed his guard skills handling the ball in transition and getting downhill, he showed his ability to make shots from multiple levels and move without the ball and he showed a lot of potential as a lock down defender too.

DeShawn Spellman | 6'7” WF | Team Loaded South

Spellman also is coming off a big junior year with Hopewell where he was their leading scorer and led them to the Class 3 state championship game, and he's set to see his recruitment really pick up on the 3SSB Circuit this summer. The 6'7” wing is a prototypical “3 and d” archetype with his big frame and long arms on the perimeter, as well as his athleticism and ability to really knock it down from deep without needing much space. He shot the ball well on the move and on kick-outs, he was dynamic in transition and attacking closeouts to get downhill and he showed good instincts jumping passing lanes and challenging shots on the perimeter.

[player_tooltip player_id='2618837' first='Christian' last='Dinges'] | 6'5” WF | VA Elite

Dinges caught our eye last fall with his high school team Handley, and throughout the year he continued to improve and finished as an All State selection for one of the best teams in Class 4 this year. He's another late bloomer on a talented VA Elite team who is an intriguing prospect who should catch the eye of college coaches on the UA Rise Circuit, and with the ability to take another year could also benefit from a post grad season. The 6'5” wing seems to get taller every time we see him, he showed good perimeter skills with the ability to put it on the deck and get to the rim, he made shots efficiently from all over the floor and his athleticism was on full display playing above the rim and making plays defensively.

Soloman Shifflett | 6'3” WG | Virginia Grind Elite

I randomly ended up at a Virginia Grind game to look for some sleepers, and boy did I find one in Soloman Shifflett, a rising senior guard at Turner Ashby who was absolutely filling it up when I watched him. At 6'3” with long arms he's a smooth athlete who showed good wiggle off the bounce and finished well in traffic when he got downhill, he created space in the midrange and hit tough pull-ups and he showed the ability to move off the ball to get open and made shots from deep as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2618817' first='Arrie' last='McWilliams'] | 6'2” WG | Team [program_tooltip program_id='2416185' first='Loaded' last='804']

McWilliams is one of the best kept secrets in the Richmond area, as the All Region two guard is known as one of the best shooters in the RVA and he didn't disappoint this past weekend as he filled it up big time for his [program_tooltip program_id='2416185' first='Loaded' last='804'] group. While he's known for his shooting, what really impressed me about McWilliams is he high IQ to work off the ball to get open and his ability to not only set his feet on the move, but attack closeouts and use back door cuts to punish overly aggressive deniers. He shot the ball at a very high clip from deep off the catch, and his efficiency as a scorer is something coaches would love to have on their team.

[player_tooltip player_id='2880000' first='Josh' last='Dawyot'] | 6'6” WF | Team540

Dwayot was a guy I had circled to check out this year, as he was an All State selection for Glenvar this season, and the name was very familiar considering I remember current Virginia Tech walk-on and former Cave Spring star and state champion Owen Dawyot very well. He did not disappoint and showed why he's one of the top players missing from our Prep Hoops rankings, as he not only was one of the top scorers throughout the weekend but his 6'6” frame and game to go with it will translate well to the next level. He took advantage of mismatches as he posted smaller defenders and hit the glass hard, he showed his ability to stretch the floor from deep and he scored it from the mid-post area extremely efficiently.

[player_tooltip player_id='2780046' first='Gavin' last='Arthur'] | 6'3” WG | Jubilee Rising Stars

Arthur is one of the best kept secrets in VA as he was an All Region selection for EC Glass and he was the top scorer in the 17U Blue Division showing a deep bag as a perimeter scorer who can fill it up in bunches in many different ways. The 6'3” wing is a dead eye shooter from deep who sets his feet quickly and can knock it down with range, he showed his ability to isolate a side of the floor and take his defender off the bounce, he used great footwork with spins and fakes to create separation and he jumped passing lanes regularly for easy buckets in transition.
