Q&A: Leola-Frederick & Winner

The South Dakota high school basketball season is in the books, but we are taking a look back! Prep Hoops Dakotas is publishing a series of Season Reviews to help recap and celebrate the season.   PHD has two Season Reviews for basketball fans to read and they are coming at you Q&A style!   We are looking at a Class B team who won 19 games and a Class A team who won 16 games.   Before we get to the team info, PHD wants to give a shout-out to [player_tooltip player_id='1386801' first='Noah' last='Kippley'] from Leola-Frederick for being named Class B 2nd Team All-State and [player_tooltip player_id='2249344' first='Carter' last='Craven'] from Winner for being named Class A 3rd Team All-State!! "Successful regular season with playoffs ending too early, eventually our injuries caught up with us as we fell to a veteran, gritty Waverly-South Shore squad."   PHD: Do you have any fun memories you want to share with us?   "Winning the Lake Region Conference for the first time since 2012-13."   PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?   "We believed in the next man up mentality, we had guys out for injury at the start of the year, middle, and end of the year."   PHD: What are a few things your team improved on throughout the season?   "Getting the right reads in our press."   PHD: Can you talk about your seniors?   "[player_tooltip player_id='2464879' first='Gavin' last='Nickelson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1386801' first='Noah' last='Kippley'] experienced and were a cause of much of our success during their careers. We won 8, 11, 22, and 19 games during their freshman through senior years with a State Tourney appearance and Conference Crown. Noah individually left a huge mark on our program as he finished with 1,208 points and 159 career made threes, a three-time All-Conference pick, Conference MVP this season. He was All-State as a junior and All-State as a senior."   PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?   "[player_tooltip player_id='2464876' first='Jace' last='Thorpe'] will be a sophomore next year and played substantial minutes as injuries piled up."   PHD: Any last comments/thoughts on the season?   "This is a great group of boys that have made a presence on the Titans' history books, we return a large junior class that includes three All-Conference players in [player_tooltip player_id='2297365' first='Westyn' last='Thorpe'], [player_tooltip player_id='1634581' first='Milo' last='Sumption'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1634582' first='Ethan' last='Petrich']. We look forward to being healthy and having a solid 2025-26 season." "We feel we had a very nice season. We battled and gave ourselves a chance in every game. We were able to defend and rebound, which kept us in a lot of games this season."   PHD: Do you have any fun memories you want to share with us?   "Sharing the joy of victories and the tough losses with our Seniors. We will miss our guys, but also know they left a great impact on our program."   PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?   "We battled the most adversity in a season we have had in our program. We had many ankle injuries, a groin injury, a shoulder injury, and sickness for about a month. Our guys persevered, and people stepped up and rallied."   PHD: What are a few things your team improved on?   "We were able to get better ball movement as the year went on. We made the extra pass that led to easier buckets."   PHD: Who are some role players that stood out to you?   "[player_tooltip player_id='2249367' first='Zac' last='Olson'], [player_tooltip player_id='2699131' first='Aiden' last='Schroeder'], [player_tooltip player_id='1675908' first='Ryder' last='Halligan'], and Landon Calhoon played bigger roles this year. They did not show up in the paper, but their impact was noticed."   PHD: Can you talk about your seniors?   "We will miss our 6 seniors and what they did for our program the last 4 years, including [player_tooltip player_id='1263163' first='Shawn' last='Hammerbeck'] and his 5 years (4 year starter). They brought it every day."   PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?   "[player_tooltip player_id='2249344' first='Carter' last='Craven'] will be a name that everyone will know if they don't already. He is a true basketball player and scorer. [player_tooltip player_id='2405782' first='Jalen' last='Tideman'] will make a large leap from his Freshman to sophomore year. Sam Steele will continue to improve and make a statement for a starting spot."   PHD: Who was your best defensive player?   "[player_tooltip player_id='2249367' first='Zac' last='Olson'] is an amazing on-ball defender. He is quick and works very hard."   PHD: Who was your top interior player?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1263163' first='Shawn' last='Hammerbeck'] was one of the best bigs in the state."   PHD: Any last comments/thoughts on the season?   "We are looking forward to a great off-season to improve for next year."
