, finding the right spot at the college level meant finding the fit both on and off the basketball floor. As a still-evolving 6-foot-7 forward, the Tualatin senior found his services to be in high demand and because of his grades, high-academic options were coming about from near and far. But when it came down to deciding, Diaz realized his future would be starting out-of-state and this week he made public his commitment to attend Macalester in St. Paul, Minnesota.
“For me, the academics where the main thing, then the way Coach Abe went at recruiting, he was honest and gave me all the information I needed and wanted,” Diaz said. “I liked the campus and the city and I felt like I could grow there.”
Coach Abe is Macalester head coach Abe Woldeslassie, who is headed into his eighth year at the helm of the Scots. During that time he and his coaching staff have earned the reputation of developing their players, something Diaz – who emerged as a senior with the Timberwolves averaging 10.0 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting over 64 percent from the field – was attracted to.
“I like how there big on improvement and how they don’t like to limit their players,” Diaz said. “Also it just seems like a environment where I can improve, the coaching staff seems like they know what they’re talking about, and they all have impressive backgrounds.”
Our congratulations go out to Diaz and his family on his commitment. He finished as the #66 player in the final Class of 2025 rankings.
