State Tournament: Wayzata Claims 3rd Title in 5 years

In this article:
The Trojans earned a third state title in five seasons. Tonight it was an 80-55 win over CDH in a dominating performance.
With what seems like and maybe was thousands of little Wayzata Trojans located throughout the building, the Trojan Army took over Williams Arena and it was a dominating performance.
It started with

hitting a pair of threes as well as assisting on other baskets.

and Anderson put the game away with most of his 24 point, 10 rebound double-double.
Wayzata is one of the few teams that still played 8-9 guys and they do it because they can. Their well taught, outstanding team defense forced the Raiders into a rough night at the arc (2 of 10 three point shooting) and rarely a comfortable attempt. And with every CDH miss or mistake came the Trojan fast break push. Wayzata had just three turnovers but a load of production from every person on the roster.
And that’s the scary thing, their roster. Those eight or nine Trojans on the floor this week included only two seniors. Four of the five Wayzata starters will return as well as two/three reserves. They are set up well for yet another run.
MVP.

. How deep is Wayzata? Their best player tonight didn’t even make the all tournament team.

‘s 24 points included four threes but a lot of active scores. And that is what makes a scorer: not just a shooter and/or attacker, but a guy that runs the floor to score, that gets putbacks to score, and that moves off the ball to score. Nolen did all of that for his 24 plus he grabbed ten rebounds.

. What I liked about Wiggins was that he had a time of struggle with some shots, and still found a way to get a groove and produce offensively for his team. We saw all aspects of the shooter tonight: catch and shoot with feet set, moving off ball to catch and hit, and using his own attack to pull-up. And more importantly we saw Wiggins attack open spaces (like the CDH late transition defense) or mismatches against bigs on the floor, vigorously. Christian scored 21 points on eight of 19 field goal shooting and three of four foul shooting.

. Dixon’s put-backs and cuts off the ball led to the first five Raider scores of the contest. There was also a really nice post move finish out of a back to the basket move into a right hand hook. In all Monteff scored 18 points on nine of ten shooting.

. I thought McBeth’s length on Ahneman (along with the physical defense of Tommy Shunmugavelu too) was a key part in limiting the Notre Dame signed big to making under half of his attempts. Wyatt had 11 points and nine rebounds with his biggest basket being the one hand slam.
Isaac Olmstead

. Isaac’s start with the deep threes and the early assists set a tone. CDH had to respect him away from the basket and with all of the Trojan weapons all over the court, it’s hard to over that much ground. Olmstead had 13 points and a game high seven assists.
