Two of the 4A classification's top teams happen to be in the same region – and are competing in a home-and-home to decide the region championship.

The most recent 4A coaches poll had May River at tenth. The Sharks have had a stellar 2024-25 campaign entering Tuesday's play with only one region loss and four losses overall. Two of them came against Hilton Head Prep and the region loss came was vs. Colleton County.

Hilton Head Prep is also responsible for one of the only two losses that Bluffton has suffered this season. The Bobcats were seventh in the most recent 4A poll and that other defeat occurred – ironically – against Hilton Head Island.

The first half of the week's home-and-home went the way of the Bobcats as they defeated the Sharks by a final score of 49-47.

Records

With the win, Bluffton improves its season mark to 21-2. The Bobcats also have a region record of 8-1. May River now stands at 15-5 and a Region 6-AAAA showing of 7-2.

Remember What Happened Last Time?

May River and Bluffton split the two region contests they played last season. On both occasions, the road team won. The Sharks earned a 44-32 win at Bluffton on Jan. 23 of last season and the Bobcats got revenge in the season finale at May River by virtue of a 39-37 victory on Feb. 9.

The Feb. 9 win for Bluffton actually snapped a seven-game losing streak the Bobcats had against May River.

Quarter-By-Quarter

Things began auspiciously for May River as it jumped out to a 12-5 lead which prompted a Bluffton timeout. What was said during that stoppage of play worked for the Bobcats as they outscored the Sharks by a margin of 15-2 through the remainder of the frame. It was 20-14 in favor of Bluffton following one quarter.

After the initial eight minutes, it was time for the next eight – and those eight would be more defensive-centric than in the first quarter. As both teams went into their respective locker rooms to strategize for the second half, it was Bluffton 29 and May River 25.

A matchup that was featuring two of the teams to beat in the 4A realm was resembling a matchup featuring two of the teams to beat in the 4A realm. With three in the books, Bluffton had the slimmest of leads – 37-36 – over May River.

It was only fitting that a matchup this competitive and entertaining would come down to the final possession. That final possession would see Bluffton ahead by a margin of 48-47. May River's attempt at a game-winner was unsuccessful and the Bobcats won for the 21st time this season.

Three for Bluffton finished in double figures scoring wise on Tuesday. Fittingly enough on Senior Night, one of them was a 2025. That upperclassman was [player_tooltip player_id='2716374' first='Jamari' last='Manning'] who led all Bobcats point-getters with 13.

The other two were juniors. Beginning with [player_tooltip player_id='2634956' first='Carnell' last='Warren'] who stands at a tall 6-foot-4. Warren concluded his evening having placed 12 on the scoreboard. Warren plays at wide receiver in football and recently committed to Virginia Tech.

Chiming in with 10 was [player_tooltip player_id='1742053' first='Harrison' last='Skinner'] who is listed at 5-foot-11. He too also plays football and thrives as a wide receiver. Warren and Skinner are among the five juniors on this season's roster for the Bobcats.

Upperclassmen also were integral in the efforts for May River. [player_tooltip player_id='1972147' first='Gage' last='Duncan'], a 2025 guard, concluded his evening with 16 points. He plays at several spots on the football gridiron during the Fall semester.
