The Springer Classic at Highland Springs took place the weekend after Christmas at Highland Springs High School, featuring six games with teams from all over the state traveling to compete. Here's a look at part one of some of the top performers from the event.

Patrick is the senior leader of this TES team that has had a great start to the season so far, and he showed why he's one of the best players in all of Richmond this year. The 6'4” Hampden Sydney commit showed his versatility as he worked well on the perimeter putting the ball on the floor, he posted smaller defenders and finished through contact and he was great working off the ball and hitting the glass for easy buckets. He set the tone early and was dominant in their blowout win over Petersburg.

[player_tooltip player_id='2252296' first='Davion' last='Brown'] | 6'4” WG | Trinity Episcopal '26

Brown may be known more for his prowess on the football field, as he's considered one of the top receivers in the country in his class, but don't get it twisted he could easily be one of the top basketball prospects in the state if he focused on just that. At 6'4” with a strong build he has tremendous speed with the ball in his hands and virtually unstoppable when he gets a head of steam and can finish through traffic with the best of them. He showed he can make shots from deep, he makes plays defensively and he's an unselfish playmaker too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2470584' first='Maddox' last='Patrick'] | 6'6” PF | Trinity Episcopal '27

The younger Patrick has dealt with some injuries over the past few years and is still coming back from those, but in the time he was on the floor he showed he's got a lot of potential moving forward. The 6'6” forward is getting back in his stride as he looked nimble and mobile working on both the perimeter and in the post, showing good footwork and touch when he gets to the rim. He has an inside-out game that makes him a walking mismatch, he's efficient in his style of play and he's versatile on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='2459361' first='Caleb' last='Straughter'] | 6'7” WF | Varina '26

Straughter may not have had his biggest scoring game in their win over a tough Maury program, but he showed his tremendous upside as he just keeps getting better on both ends of the floor. The 6'7” wing used his length and athleticism to make plays defensively and clean the glass, and while he's their biggest player and has to play the 5 he gives them the ability to play five out and create space for guards to drive. He made some shots from deep, showed his ability to play and finish in transition and made positive plays on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='2194710' first='Brian' last='Mitchell Jr.'] | 6'3” WG | Varina '27

Mitchell is considered one of the best sophomores in the Richmond area, if not the entire state, and he was absolutely fantastic for Varina in their win scoring a game high 27 points for them. At 6'3” Mitchell's a big off guard who can punish you in the paint while also being able to make tough shots from all three levels. He can work on the ball where he can create space and has a quick release to get his shot off, he can set his feet on the move and understands how to cut to get open looks and he can play in transition as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1956063' first='Adrean' last='Newton'] | 6'0” PG | Maury '25

Newton is one of the best available guards in the 757, and while Maury wasn't able to pull it out he put on a show, particularly in the fourth quarter when his team needed him to score the ball the most. He's a super shifty guard with a quick first step and the ability to change speeds, he is excellent in isolation situations and in transition and he is a very crafty finisher around the rim in traffic. He showed he can score it from multiple levels and make plays for others, while also using his quickness to make plays on the defensive end too.

[player_tooltip player_id='1956072' first='Jayvion' last='Green'] | 6'4” WG | Maury '25

Green is another intriguing available prospect for the Commodores group, as he has great positional size and has continued to develop nicely over the last few years. The 6'4” wing played all over for his team, guarding multiple positions in the process and causing a lot of mismatch problems with his skill set for his size. He made shots from multiple levels, attacked the glass hard and made plays on both ends of the floor.
