During the weekend of November 7th-9th, we ventured out to The Den in Cypress to catch a glimpse of one of Houston's premiere opening tournaments every year. Marcus Sloan was hosting the annual OTR Tipoff event, and some big-time matchups were taking place under the bright lights of Friday night to open up the scholastic basketball season for high school. Let's take a look at some of the athletes who separated themselves from the rest of the pack and their skills that made them stand out.

[player_tooltip player_id='1595666' first='Ethan' last='Mgbako'] was one of the players that showcased his high level of play on Friday night when it mattered most. He was a high source of energy for Oak Hill in their win over a stacked AZ Compass team to start the season off right and open the tournament on the right path for the Warriors. Mgbako can function as either a playmaker or scorer for his squad on offense and makes high IQ decisions with the ball in his hands.

Jackson was the most complete player in [player_tooltip player_id='2382175' first='Xavier' last=''] Academy's friday night win over the Seven Lakes Spartans. He finished the contest with double digit points and showed he can score from all three levels. He also had about 8-9 rebounds, showing a willingness to be aggressive in the paint on defense and secure loose balls for the Falcons. Seastrunk has a high motor that allows him to get out in transition and either get a bucket or move the ball well, outrunning defenders to get to his spots.

Landon was a big-time force in the paint for Good Vision Academy in a statement win over Red Rock Academy Friday night. He showed that he is disciplined in the paint on defense, using his long wingspan to send back several shots and come down with the board for his squad. Veal also had great calm and poise when knocking down a couple long range buckets as he displayed some range on his jump shot when left open by his matchup.

Trent was one of the most complete prospects I watched at the OTR Tipoff and impressed in several ways during SoCal Academy's crunch time win over Legacy School of Sport Sciences. MacLean has deep range on his 3 pt shot, and with his 6'9 frame, can get it over the top of defenders with ease as well as having the speed and awareness to get to the basket and draw fouls or finish an uncontested layup/dunk. His defensive timing was also very valuable as he knows how to time blocks before they hit the backboard and play passing lanes with great vision. He will be a huge offensive weapon for SoCal Academy this year as they compete during the scholastic season.
