We are highlighting two Class B squads from South Dakota. They have a new coach, but this is not the first time Chris Hettick has led a basketball program. In fact, he has 20+ years of experience as a head coach. The Wolverines have youthful talent, it will be fun to see how this group comes together and how the season shakes out. Herreid-Selby is not a veteran group, but they have a desire to improve, and they want to win. [player_tooltip player_id='2255250' first='Adonnais' last='Mills'] 6'2 Soph G - "Athletic and long. Can score in bunches and has an aggressive mindset. "This team finished the season with a record of 3 wins and 18 losses and graduated away 5 seniors. From a win/loss standpoint, it was extremely disappointing."     PHD: Who will be your primary ballhandler this year?   "We have multiple players that will have to take care of the ball as turnovers were a huge factor in the 18 losses last season. As a whole, our team needs to improve their ball handling and decision-making."   PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?   "We really had a nice off-season. The first thing we did was implement a shooting program and we had multiple guys making over 8,000 shots this summer which was a vast improvement from years past. One thing about this group is even though they are young they want to be good."   PHD: Who are a couple of up-and-comers to look out for?   "We have a couple of young kids that I am excited to watch develop, most specifically [player_tooltip player_id='2255250' first='Adonnais' last='Mills'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2633958' first='Tatem' last='Quasnick']. They both have good work ethics and really love the game."   PHD: What are the goals for the team this year?   "Our goal is to learn how to practice and learn how to play the game at a high level so we can compete. We are just so young that I am not sure this team knows what practicing at an elite level even looks like. We have to see continued improvement from game to game. Whether that equates to wins and losses I'm not sure but even if we see it in the film it will be a success."   PHD: Any last comments about the upcoming season?   "Truthfully, in 21 years as a head basketball coach, I have never dealt with a team this young and inexperienced. We have 1 senior and 2 juniors, with the main core of our team being Sophomores. At some point, age plays a factor in the results. There will definitely be situations where we simply are not ready to compete with more experienced veteran groups. We have to view this season as laying a foundation for how we want this to look for the next few years. There is talent on this team it is just incredibly young." "Went 19-1 in the regular season and advanced to the program's first State Tournament since the 2004-05 season. We lost to Castlewood by 5, Gregory by 1, and Viborg-Hurley by 9 at the Barnett Center but took away plenty of things to improve on for this upcoming season."   PHD: Who will be your primary ballhandler this year?   "Our three main ballhandlers will be [player_tooltip player_id='2297365' first='Westyn' last='Thorpe'], [player_tooltip player_id='2464879' first='Gavin' last='Nickelson'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1386801' first='Noah' last='Kippley']. Westyn is more of a PG while Gavin is more of a slasher and attack with the ball in front court while Noah is a true scorer but both are more than capable of handling the basketball and making decisions with the basketball."   PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?   "We had our skills sessions and attended three team camps in Minnesota, we had a couple high minutes players out with injury so we got a look at some kids who are competing for minutes get a live look at varsity action."   PHD: Who are a few of your top players to look out for?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1386801' first='Noah' last='Kippley'], two-time All-Lake Region Conference and All-State Honorable Mention last year, was our leading scorer last season and is approaching the 1,000 point mark for his career. [player_tooltip player_id='1634581' first='Milo' last='Sumption'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1634582' first='Ethan' last='Petrich'] handled a lot of our rebounding and post-defense. [player_tooltip player_id='2464879' first='Gavin' last='Nickelson'] gets a lot of dirty things done for us. [player_tooltip player_id='1548636' first='Winston' last='Clark'] had a great State Tournament shooting the ball for us coming off the bench and [player_tooltip player_id='2297365' first='Westyn' last='Thorpe'] is one of our better ballhandlers. All these guys have high motors and play with a chip on their shoulder."   PHD: Who are a couple of up-and-comers to look out for?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1551743' first='Titus' last='Kippley'] had a breakout freshman season last year for us, we expect him to be better this year. [player_tooltip player_id='2464876' first='Jace' last='Thorpe'] will compete for minutes as a freshman after seeing some time in games last year as an 8th grader. [player_tooltip player_id='2523163' first='Zander' last='Hoffman'] had a solid summer entering his junior year and could see some minutes this year also."   PHD: Who do you think will be your top interior players?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1634582' first='Ethan' last='Petrich'] (120 rebounds) and [player_tooltip player_id='1634581' first='Milo' last='Sumption'] (154 rebounds) held down the low block offensively and defensively last year as sophomores, as they enter their junior year we expect much of the same from them and more as they are a year older and stronger. Ethan is a physical specimen with his size and strength both offensively and defensively and Milo is a constant pest and workhorse on the glass."   PHD: What are your goals for the year?   "We like to think we are in the mix to make the State Tourney after getting a taste of it last season despite losing three close games. Brayden Sumption had a big role in our run last year but we return 7 of our top 9 from last season and have high expectations for 2024-25."   PHD: Who are some of the top teams & players in Region1?   "Aberdeen Christian returns with plenty of options from a team that finished the year strong."   "Warner, Jesiah Baum is a tough matchup and [player_tooltip player_id='2529002' first='Drew' last='Bakeberg'] is a quality shooter."   "Tiospa Zina is new to the Region and came down from Class A so they present some problems."   "Waverly-South Shore returns their whole front court from a SoDak16 appearance."   "Waubay/Summit is back from being in Class A for the last few years. They have a pair of Neilans that present matchup difficulties."   phd: Any last comments about the upcoming season?   "We return many athletes from last year's season and are looking forward to playing quality teams in the Lake Region Conference and Region 1B. We added Groton to the schedule with our Hanson Classic appearance as well. Oakes (ND) and Ellendale (ND) always have quality teams. We look forward to improving and getting better throughout the season."
