I recently visited the gym at Wayne Memorial to watch an open gym. Before we talk about the talent, let's talk about the culture. When you walk in the gym, you can feel the respect and positivity. The young men in the gym have obviously been taught how to be successful both on and off the court.

Now for the talent. We will break this into 2 parts, with this article being our first look. The players covered will be randomly placed in the 2 pieces.

Austin Torrey (2025, Wayne Memorial)

Torrey is a very impressive prospect. The bouncy forward/wing has grown a ton as of late and is definitely getting his feet under himself. He uses his length to rebound high off the rim. Torrey liked to get downhills and showed off a nice spin move to his right. He effectively used a shot fake with a side step to get a look at the rim from mid range. Torrey also showed that he had range on his jumper with a solid catch and shoot 3.

Josh Dennis (2025, Wayne Memorial)

Dennis might have been the highlight of the afternoon for me. If I was a Division 3 college coach, I would have offered him on the spot. Dennis flat out wins hustle points. He searches for and delivers a box out on EVERY SINGLE SHOT THAT GOES UP. With his core strength, they are effective box outs as well. This helps him rebound much bigger than his height and makes him so dangerous with his put back buckets. Dennis was a more than willing screener. He even rescreened up top to get space for a ball handler. We don't see many rescreens in open gyms. That tells you something. Dennis showed touch on a swing pass to a teammate for a 3 and he could be relied on to swing the ball and not let it stick.

Allen just seems to get better every time that I see him play. If possible, he looked even more athletic and physically stronger than the last time I saw him this summer. Allen summed up that athleticism with an above the rim 1 handed flush. His strength helped him finish at the rim through contact. It seemed like Allen could create space with his handles pretty much whenever he wanted to. He was terrific with his use of the inside-out dribble. Allen was a definite leader who took responsibility for a clean and effective open gym.

Chase Dyer (2026, Wayne Memorial)

Dyer is a name to remember as he has a lot of talent and upside. He has impressive quickness and athleticism. Dyer can play at a fast pace, getting up and down the floor with ease and quickness. I really liked the way he moved without the ball and found open space along the 3 point line. Dyer had at least 2 pretty and pure catch and shoot triples.

Jalahn McClellan (2025, Wayne Memorial)

McClellan made his mark at the Wayne Memorial open gym. He definitely caught my eye with his offensive game. I saw McClellan bury 3 triples with quick and smooth movement from shooting pocket to release. The quick trigger made his jumper very tough to challenge. He was another player that was willing to work off the ball to get his looks. McClellan wasn't just a shooter though, as he could attack off the bounce as well.
