The first rankings for the Class of 2028 have been released and freshmen around the state will be making their high school debuts this season – including a number immediately at the varsity level. While the current list is very much a work in progress, we've been able to see a number of these newcomers in action this summer to get a feel for their current talents and upside, both with their future high schools in June and recently at the PrepHoops Freshman Showcase. Additionally, after talking with coaches and others in the basketball scene we have been able to come up with this initial top 5:

Lockhart has long been considered one of the top prospects in the Class of 2028 since he was very young, and after his stellar performance at the PrepHoops Freshman Showcase, the Gresham freshman cemented his status as the #1 ranked player in the initial class rankings. The 6-foot guard is extremely skilled with the basketball, both with his lefty shooting stroke and his handle, and is already capable of scoring effectively at all three levels. He's already a step ahead as he's the first player in the class to pick up a scholarship offer, from the University of San Francisco.

Earlier this summer, Ratcliffe was already raising eyebrows - mainly because of his sheer size at almost 6-foot-8 in height and a body that's not only mature but capable of putting on even more weight and strength. To add to his physical stature, the Wilsonville freshman also has some skills with the hoop facing the basket, so as much as he dominates the lane he can also step out and create. An outstanding rebounder and paint protector, the big man may start right away for the Wildcats.

Another prospect that has been on the radar for quite some time has been Read, who is arguably the most recognizable name in the class outside of the Portland Metro area. The 6-foot-7 forward has the versatility to play both inside and out, and was able to showcase his finishing skills at the PrepHoops Freshman Showcase by throwing down multiple dunks in every game. With added weight and strength, Read's upside is tremendous and he'll make an instant impact this upcoming season at Churchill.

Harper-Grant was arguably one of the best players on his championship-level Elite 24 AAU squad this past spring and summer, and not only got minutes playing with Grant during June but also impressed during the PrepHoops Freshman Showcase. At 6-foot-3, he's long, rangy, and athletic, excels at finishing around the rim but can also step outside and knock down jumpers. The Generals will have a loaded roster this year but the fact that Harper-Grant will likely be in the rotation is quite meaningful.

Already built like a tank at 6-foot-2, Niko may have the ability to physically dominate opponents but the Benson freshman is extremely light on his feet and is skilled with the basketball. At the PrepHoops Freshman Showcase he couldn't be stopped inside, but was also difficult to contain outside of the paint as he could shoot the jumper as well as create off of the bounce. Benson will be very young this season but Niko will get plenty of opportunity to not only get minutes, but make a huge impact.
