June 17th-18th I watched the second ever Section-7 Qualifier. There were 96 teams in 12 pools of 8 teams each.

The 12 winners advanced to the official Section-7 June 21st-23rd versus some of the top teams in the West Coast.

I took in a bunch of full games and half of some of the games. Some of the top teams unfortunately for myself (great for the team) were already clearly blowing out their opponent and the bench five were already playing, so I missed them play.

Here were the standout point guard and combo guards from the senior class

[player_tooltip player_id='1542272' first='Michael' last='Payne'] Cholla

A big weekend for the scoring point guard. He can direct the offense and handles heavy ball pressure but he is natural scorer. Down close to 15 under four minutes to advance to Section-7 Payne went off. He hit deep three after deep three off the dribble and iced the game with clutch plays. He also played tough on-ball defense and makes the right plays.

[player_tooltip player_id='2133624' first='Cyree' last='Jenkins'] Cholla

The partner in crime is Cyree. He is hyper athletic and is a menace on the ball defensively. He rebounds usually well with his bounce and toughness. The lefty has a quick first step and made a huge and-1 in the final minutes to win it.

[player_tooltip player_id='1150847' first='Carlos' last='Coronado Jr'] Coolidge

A bigger pure point guard with phenomenal passing ability and length. He uses his wingspan and quicker feet to defend on the ball and collect steals. He makes it very hard to get past him. He can pull-up from mid-range and hit the deep three off the catch or pull.

[player_tooltip player_id='1601785' first='Leyton' last='Steenhard'] Queen Creek (Pictured)

A scoring point guard is a great passer. He scores with euros down the lane with either hand, he can shoot it from the perimeter off the catch from the three and will use the floater game. He knows how to hesitate and get by his defender and score thru contact despite his leaner frame. He should have a huge year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1491235' first='Tamar' last='Johnson'] Carl Hayden

A scoring point guard with plus court vision. He has speed and quickness to get past his initial defender. He will score with catch threes, pull-ups and he made a clutch free throw down the stretch to win it.

[player_tooltip player_id='2039488' first='Tion' last='Wright'] Carl Hayden

A combo guard is stretching out and getting bigger. He is a very good passer but is a natural scorer. He will score inside on ball fakes, perimeter jumpers to the three and inside drives. He rebounds well with his long arms and plays the passing lanes with quicker feet.

[player_tooltip player_id='1431745' first='AJ' last='Anderson'] Paradise Valley

A tough scoring lead guard. He will rattle off catch threes and uses his toughness and broader shoulder to get downhill with a quick burst and takes contact well. He is really strong and tough to rebound and defend on the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='1285934' first='Zaire' last='Richardson'] San Tan Charter

A scoring combo guard makes it look easy in stretches. He is quick with the ball and has some speed. He gets downhill with left or right hand and rises up from mid to the three point line. He is a very good on-ball defender with his quick feet and hands.

[player_tooltip player_id='1950137' first='Dylan' last='Stanley'] Cibola

An athletic combo guard can score and make plays for his teammates. He uses his bounce and aggression to rebound out of his area and gets downhill with a quick first step. He can hit perimeter jumpers and is good in transition.

[player_tooltip player_id='1337025' first='Drew' last='Hall'] Red Mountain

A talented guard can play on or off the ball. He seems to always just make the correct play. He is their true point guard on the team and guided them with a nice mixture of scoring amd facilitating. He scores on jumpers off the dribble or catch, deceptive quick bursts into the lane using his left hand well and can step back off of the defender. His mind and skill will arguably make him the most important transfer in 6A.

[player_tooltip player_id='1876304' first='MJ' last='Baldwin'] West Point

A pure point guard with a tight handle who can handle ball pressure and score. He sees the court well with next level passes and can score on pull-ups from mid to the three. He is very confident to score and he is hard to keep in front of him.
