This article is a five-part series detailing the top 10 players in the Borderland area by position group. The point guards were assessed by their ball handling, passing/shot creation, point-of-attack defense, and communication.
10: Hector Perez
10: Hector Perez
Perez doesn’t meet the traditional ideal of true point guard in that he is a score first player. That said, you can’t blame the kid because he can score in bunches with the best of them. He plays against lower-level competition on the private school circuit but he could play for any public school in the Borderland. His outside shooting alone would get him minutes and a starting position on a lot of teams.
9: Austin Bonilla
9: Austin Bonilla
Always the smallest player on the floor but never the least effective. Bonilla is great with the ball in his hands and hard to turn over because of his low center of gravity. His lack of height is actually one of his greatest attributes. I’ve seen him play against elite teams with elite pressing systems, and he is hard to turnover. With that, he’s great at breaking a press and creates a lot of scoring opportunities as a dribble-drive penetrator. Lastly, he’s the only player on Canutillo with a positive assists-to-turnover ratio.
8: Ethan Becerra
8: Ethan Becerra
An undersized guard who plays with a lot of toughness and effort. Becerra is an easy player to like because of his competitive spirit and the tenacity he brings to the game. Moreover, he just makes plays: hitting timely threes on the offensive end or coming up with steals on the defensive end. He does just about everything you want at the point guard position. Additionally, he can score from the perimeter with the best of them if given space.
7: Jacob Garcia
7: Jacob Garcia
It’s hard not to be high on this kid. As a sophomore, he seems to do very little wrong, which explains his playing time on a team stacked at the guard position. He’s arguably the best bench player in the Borderland and is Chapin’s third leading scorer. He finds himself coming into games during advantageous times because the Huskies are so good at getting out to early leads. That said, the leads tend to increase, not decrease when he’s playing. He’s the top point guard from the class of 2027 and I don’t see that changing.
6: Isaiah Carbajal
6: Isaiah Carbajal
Hands down one of the best 3-point shooters in the Borderland. Carbajal can take over a game from behind the arch in more ways than one. Most players at the high school level are limited in their ability to hit movements threes let alone doing it off the dribble. Carbajal can do both and at a very high level, but he is more than just a shooter. He’s an absolute pest on the defensive end who can rack up steals with the best of them.
5: Julian Pacheco
5: Julian Pacheco
Not enough people know about Julian Pacheco because of the team he plays on. In their starting five alone, Chapin has three top 10 players in the city. So, naturally, a lot of attention goes to them. However, Chapin’s greatness can be understood in one word: depth. Pacheco is part of that depth as he provides reliable ball handling, good defense, and much needed outside scoring. He led the Huskies in 3-pointers made this season and shot more than any other teammate by a significant margin. I believe he is going to have a huge senior season as his role increases in 2025.
4: Ethan Martinez
4: Ethan Martinez
Not much separates Ethan Martinez from the remaining guards ranked above him. He is great at controlling the pace of the game. Moreover, like most point guards, he bears a ton of responsibility when it comes to ball handling. More so than any other player I have scouted. Franklin would be a drastically different team in terms of style of play and record if they didn’t have Martinez to fall back on. Offensively, he is a selective shooter–arguably too selective at times–but is capable of scoring at all three levels when needed.
3: Lenny Washington Lenny Washington 6'4" | SG Organ Mountain | 2025 State NM
3: Lenny Washington Lenny Washington 6'4" | SG Organ Mountain | 2025 State NM
I love everything about this kid’s potential and how he is deployed at Organ Mountain. He has great length for the position and is a excellent playmaker out in transition. I can’t think of another point guard I would rather have in transition/fastbreak sequences other than Washington. He’s speed, above the rim finishing ability, and passing make him the most dynamic player on this list. Additionally, he is the best defensive point guard I have scouted by a considerable margin.
2: Cam Gulley
2: Cam Gulley
It’s hard not putting Gulley as the top-rated point guard in the Borderland. If anything, this is a 1A and 1B situation with Gulley and the top point guard on this list. The Andress senior is great at picking his spots, blending a pass first style and elite 3-point shooting. There is not a team Gulley doesn’t start on in the Borderland, even at programs with great guard depth. He is either taking over at the one or teams have to make room for him at the two. Some people in El Paso would argue that he is the best point guard in the city. Although, I slightly disagree, I wouldn’t argue with their reasoning.
1: Devin Falk-Ramirez Devin Falk-Ramirez 6'0" | PG Eastwood | 2025 TX
1: Devin Falk-Ramirez Devin Falk-Ramirez 6'0" | PG Eastwood | 2025 TX
Fits the mold of a prototypical pass first point guard but has the ability to take games over with his scoring. Falk-Ramirez takes the top spot on this list because he blends playmaking with scoring efficiency better than any player I have scouted, regardless of position. He could easily be a top-rated shooting guard, but he does so much as a shot creator for Troopers. Moreover, he’s more effective offensively when he plays on the ball. Defensively, he gets the job done too. Falk-Ramirez is a two-way player whose effort and will to win can’t be questioned.
