Summer Standouts You Need To Know

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A summer filled with hoops is over as most players have returned to classes at their respective high schools. The 2026-27 season will be here before we know it. It's just three months away! Here are a few of the summer standouts:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2381046' first='Christian' last='Covarrubia'], Mayfield</strong>: The Trojans are aiming for back-to-back Class 5A playoff berths. Covarrubia will be a key player for Mayfield in 2026-27. He averaged about 9 points per game last season. Based on his summer performance, he should easily surpass that number next season. Averaged nearly 18 points per game at the Nike Phenom Camp, earning an invitation to Hawaii Hoopfest next June in Honolulu. Excellent shooter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2833891' first='Jordan' last='Holland'], Fort Sumner/House</strong>: An elite two-sport athlete, Holland led Fort Sumner/House to the Class 1A state championship in March, scoring 31 points in the title game. He's been just as good during the summer months as he trains for two sports. At a Chicago camp, Holland scored 25 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and made 4 steals. By all accounts, he's developing into an elite 3-point shooter. He made 94 3-pointers and shot 37 percent from beyond the arc in 2025-26. Watch for that percentage to rise above 40 percent in 2026-27.  </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Sam Marez, Del Norte</strong>: Based on how he has performed this summer, Marez is a strong candidate for Breakout Player of the Year. Del Norte lost their only double digit scorers to graduation, but Martez looks ready to take over the scoring burden in a big way. Marez competed at tournaments in Oklahoma, Arizona, Las Vegas, and California, among other places. Excellent 3-pointer shooter. He can also attack closeouts and finish at the rim. Named a Top Performer at the Arizona Desert Diamond Invitational in July and awarded a spot on the All-Star team at the Mike Phenom Camp in California.
