Continue ReadingThe Middle School Camp in Minnetonka, Minnesota brought together talented prospects from the 2028, 2029, and 2030 classes. There were participants on the roster slate from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and North Carolina. The 2028’s were the larger group and they were all grouped together to compete against each other in 3-on-3 scenarios, then onto 5-on-5 competition. The 2029 and 2030 classes were grouped together to compete in the same format. I had the task of covering the 2029 and 2030 classes from the event.
We will breakdown each team and have analysis on each prospect, but first, let’s look at the elite prospects and those deemed worthy of having their names on the All-Camp team. We have a short list of six prospects that we need to know before diving into things more.
Giovanni Horton | 2029 | 5’6” | PG | Valley Middle School (MN) | Jsizzles |
Horton has the feel and play style of a future point guard. Just a really smooth game and feel for the point guard position. One of the few prospects at the event that I could comfortably project as a true point guard and floor general. Did a good job of handling pressure and understands changing speeds and direction. Probably the best and most effective ball-handler. Was able to get in the lane easily with his handling ability, hesitation moves, first step, and his ability to breakdown a defender.
Jaylen Greer Jaylen Greer 5'10" | PG MN | 2029 | 5’10” | Guard | Friendly Hills (MN) |
Greer is a big and explosive guard with a major skill-set. Can explode off the drive with a quick first couple steps and score in multiple fashions at the hoop. A nice touch and can pull off some difficult plays for buckets. Could drive hard at the hoop and stop on a dime to pull-up from the mid-range area. His handle and offensive ability surprised me, considering his size and age. He could become a good one that many will know in the state of Minnesota and be one of the top prospects in the 2029 class.
Ben Pritzl Ben Pritzl 6'0" | CG WI | 2029 | 6’0” | G/Wing | DeForest (WI) | Wisconsin Swing
The six-foot guard/wing stood out with his size/length/skill combination for his age group. One of the tallest and longest prospects in the 2029 group, and he might have been the best overall athlete, when it comes to movement and agility on the court. His defensive ability and quick hands really stood out. Did a good job of creating turnovers and steals. Offensively, he is very advanced as well, with a well-rounded skill set as a handler, passer, and shooter. Can create on his own and create separation to get his jumper off whenever he wants.
Tolu Taiwo Tolu Taiwo 5'10" | PF MN | 2029 | 5’10” | Forward | Oakland Middle School (MN) | Uncheckable Elite |
A big and strong kid that is also a good athlete and mover on the court. A position-less prospect that is versatile on both ends. Can play on the perimeter offensively and will crash the boards, and brought down a ton of them for offensive put-backs at the camp. He was a little too big and too physical for the opposition to keep him off the boards.
James King | 2029 | 5’8” | SG | Lakeville South (MN) | Minnesota Magic |
King, in my opinion, was one of the top youngsters in terms of skill, basketball IQ, and understanding the game. He was on another level in his decision-making. He also made plays, with some high level of difficulty buckets at the hoop that he made look a little too routine. An elite handle, passing, shooting, and finishing repertoire.
Maurice Huff | 2029 | 5’11” | G/F | Fridley Middle School (MN) | Spartans |
Not pictured, but Huff made a long lasting impact after the Middle School Camp. He could have been considered the MVP or top performer of the camp. He handled the ball from the point and was in relentless attack mode. He was bigger and stronger than his defender, and he basically willed his way to the hoop, and he could not be contained. He would board-and-go, rebounding the ball and immediately take the ball up and create a transition opportunity. He was not out there trying to make friends, as he had an aggressive demeanor. Played with high energy and a constant motor, flying around the court defensively and pushing the pace offensively.
