Continue ReadingThere aren’t enough guard spots for all of Wellsville guards, much less the other good ones in the tournament. Like with the other all-tourney teams, we tried to get creative to fit all the deserving guys on the first team, but also tried to make sure guys got due credit.
The second team is significant for two reasons. It includes two members of the Southeast of Saline team because there just wasn’t room for everyone on the first team. And it also is the first all-star team we’ve announced that includes players whose teams were knocked out in the first round. With two of the top four teams not playing a lot of big men, we found that a couple of the most impressive bigs only played once at Hutchinson.
Here is the 2024 3A All-Tournament Team:
PG – Kenyon Gillins, 5-foot-8 guard, 2025, Wellsville (pictured):
Frankly, we didn’t appreciate how good this guy is until he put together his three-game run at Hutchinson. The minute he hit the floor against Ellsworth, it was apparent he was going to be a problem throughout the tournament. He was a darting, dashing nightmare for defenses and a troublemaker for opposing offenses. He canned nine 3-pointers in the tourney, including 5 in that huge win over Beloit. He finished as Wellsville’s leading scorer for the tournament with 49.
SG – Willie Dorsey Willie Dorsey 6'2" | SG Wellsville | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2024, Wellsville:
Dorsey’s role for the state champs can’t be overestimated. He handled the ball and worked as a traditional guard. But as one of the tallest players in the small, quick lineup, his rebounding and defense in the paint was essential. He was up to the task. Dorsey was on the floor almost every minute and provided in every facet of the game. His performance in the title game was historic: 5-6 from behind the arc, 6-6 from the line, 23 points, 9 rebounds.
SF – (tie) Brady Brumbaugh Brady Brumbaugh 6'5" | SG Goodland | 2025 State KS , 6-foot-5 forward, 2025, Goodland, and Calvin Dwyer Calvin Dwyer 6'0" | CG Wellsville | 2024 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2024, Wellsville:
The team gets crowded here, but we have to get both these guys on. Brumbaugh was the tournament’s leading scorer with 55 points. He is a big shooting guard who causes a lot of defensive problems for opponents. He had his team one good quarter away from the title. But it was Wellsville that came up big in that final quarter of the state final. Dwyer was a big reason for the team’s success. We’re listing him as a small forward because he spent so much time in the high post and moving on the baseline. From those spots he was very creative finding midrange shots or moving the ball to scorers. He totally understood his role at the offensive end. He was one of the team’s leading rebounders and was a quick, pesky defender both in the lane and on the perimeter. He finished with 14-21 shooting for 39 points.
PF – (tie) Bryce Beisner Bryce Beisner 6'7" | PF Beloit | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-7 forward, 2024, Beloit and Linkon Cure Linkon Cure 6'5" | PF Goodland | 2025 State KS , 6-foot-6 forward, 2025, Goodland:
As the headline player entering the tournament, Beisner didn’t disappoint. He was crucial helping to handle the ball against pressure and move it in the offensive set. He hit tough shots from the midrange and was a wrecking ball in the paint and on the glass. Cure had a similar impact, blocking shots, skying for rebounds and making highlight plays above the rim. He was remarkably consistent, hitting four shots in each game and finishing with 12 or 13 points in each.
C – Eli Johnson Eli Johnson 6'5" | C Beloit | 2025 State KS , 6-foot-5 center, 2025, Beloit:
While we knew how good Beisner was, it was Johnson who really opened eyes. He’s big, strong and explosive. He used those skills to dominate around the goal. He hit an incredible percentage of his shots – 23 of 28 attempts – partly because of how many two-handed slams he threw down. He moves well to get to shots and has nice touch. He recorded the highlight moment of the tournament when he knocked down a three-quarters court shot at the buzzer against Wellsville.
Second Team:
PG – Dez Winton, 5-foot-10 guard, 2024, Wellsville, and Manny Gonzalez Manny Gonzalez 5'9" | PG Goodland | 2024 State KS , 5-foot-8 guard, 2024, Goodland
SG – Gannon Jacobson Gannon Jacobson 6'1" | CG Southeast Of Saline | 2026 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2026, Southeast of Saline
SF – Owen Bailey, 6-foot-1 forward, 2025, Southeast of Saline
PF – Loch North Loch North 6'4" | SF Riverton | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-4 forward, 2024, Riverton
C – Riley Stone, 6-foot-3 center, 2024, Ellsworth
