Continue ReadingHoben was dynamic in Grand View Christian’s come-from-behind win over Grundy Center, scoring 27 points on 9-16 shooting (6-10 3P, 3-4 FT) to go with 10 rebounds. A 6-4/6-5 combo forward who showed the ability to take smaller defenders onto the block and score as well as move without the ball and shoot it off the catch, Hoben has a quick release on his jumper and extended range. He doesn’t do much off the dribble at this point in his development, but his shooting and tenacity on the glass are very valuable.
Jameson Scharnberg
Jameson Scharnberg
Scharnberg, a Des Moines Christian transfer, was huge for the Thunder in his first game with the team, scoring 10 points on 2-6 shooting (1-4 3P, 5-5 FT) to go with 3 assists, a steal, and a block. All 10 of his points came in the fourth quarter, helping lead them to a come-from-behind win by making a few big defensive plays and knocking down a huge 3 to give them a lead late. He then showed ice water in his veins, knocking down free throws to ice it down the stretch. He’s a shifty guard who can create off the dribble for himself and others, and he has a pure stroke off the catch.

Jirovsky was fantastic off the bench for the Spartans against Grand View Christian, scoring 23 points on 8-12 shooting (5-8 3P, 2-2 FT) with 2 rebounds and 2 steals. A 5-11 off-ball guard oozing with confidence, he was especially dynamic in the first half, scoring 19 of his 23 points in the first two quarters, going 7-8 from the floor and 5-6 from deep. He moves really well without the ball, taking advantage of sleepy defenders to cut back door and finish at the rim with either hand. He’s a creative finisher at the bucket and is able to finish through contact. He showed a quick release off the catch.
Cael LaFrentz
Cael LaFrentz
LaFrentz got into early foul trouble for the Vikings in their win over Waverly-Shell Rock but still finished with 12 points on 4-9 shooting (4-5 FT), 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. The 6-10 sophomore son of former NBAer Raef LaFrentz, Cael is thin and will need to add some strength to his frame, but he has a chance to be a pretty special player. He moves well for a young big man of his size, has fluid footwork, and he does a pretty good job of staying vertical when contesting shots. He knocks down his free throws, despite the form being a bit funky, and he has a nice 12-footer in his arsenal. As he continues to improve his footwork and strength on the block, he’ll be an absolute force on the offensive end.
