One of PVI’s greatest strengths is its ability to play with pace. It doesn’t matter if the ball goes in or not. They are going to push the pace. A big reason they do it so effectively is Ben Hammond Ben Hammond 5’10” | PG Paul VI | 2024 State #143 Nation VA . Hammond was his usual pest on defense and set the tone early, scoring the first few buckets of the game and never looking back. He finished with 11 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in a comfortable win over Bishop O’Connell.
Jordan Smith Jordan Smith 6’1″ | PG Evergreen Christian | 2025 VA ‘s all-world-level athleticism was on display throughout the game. He had a couple of dunks that infused PVI with energy and had a great game on defense. Jordan had a huge putback, finishing with a tied team-high 14 points.
Bishop O’Connell struggled to score mightily as a team all game. I don’t think people around the country always give PVI’s defense the credit they deserve, and they showed how good they are on that side of the ball today. A lot of what O’Connell does goes through Bryson Tucker Bryson Tucker 6’6″ | PG Unknown | 2024 State #22 Nation VA , and Isaiah Abraham Isaiah Abraham 6’7″ | SG Paul VI | 2024 State #62 Nation VA shut him down. Isaiah’s defensive versatility will translate the most for him at the next level, and he put an absolute gem on that side of the ball today. He had a thunderous dunk in the first half and knocked down a three. He finished with a tied team-high 14 points.
For many O’Connell players, this was a game to forget, but Wyatt Norton Wyatt Norton 6’8″ | C Bishop O’Connell | 2025 State VA played well to me. Wyatt competed throughout the game and had a highly productive day on the offensive glass. Wyatt had many of his points off of his offensive rebounds, and his effort was nice to watch. He finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Gonzaga and DeMatha played another low-scoring game, and it was close wire-to-wire. My player of the game was Nyk Lewis, even though he didn’t have a great second-half scoring-wise. Nyk was everywhere on both ends, and it seemed like he was diving for a loose ball whenever possible. He was aggressive getting to the rim and led Gonzaga with 13. He also added 7 rebounds.
Malcolm Thomas Malcolm Thomas 6’8″ | PF DeMatha | 2024 State #122 Nation MD was the only player on DeMatha that had an effective game as a scorer for their standard outside of Caden Thomas, who had a nice game off the bench himself. Malcolm knocked down a three, had a nice fadeaway, and had a couple of really nice moves. He scored efficiently and had a game-high 17 points.
