The No. 6 Eagles (21-2, 3-0) contested shots well at every level to hold the No. 7 Buccaneers (20-9, 2-1) to a season-low scoring output, and four different players scored during the pivotal run to break open the eventual 45-32 victory.
“We went downstairs for halftime, and coach pep-talked us up and told us we need to play harder,” junior forward Kobe Butler Kobe Butler 6'7" | SF Archbishop Shaw | 2025 State LA said. “Because we knew we were better than this team, and we came out there and we acted like it. We played hard, and the results came out.”
The district-determining contest was decided by the largest margin in four meetings the past three years in the rekindled series, a notable distinction in the top-10 matchup in the Division-II Select power rankings with the playoffs fast approaching.
“It was huge,” said coach Wesley Laurendine said. “Beating a team twice is always hard. I was so happy we got to play ’em earlier (at Brother Martin’s tournament in December), because it made it feel like a district matchup — I’m a big fan of the old Catholic League playing twice and all that stuff. So that’s why it was such a big crowd, and us being able to handle that and close it out was huge.
“And Aidan LaSalle with a huge bucket when we needed a score, our seniors stepped up tonight.”
Daryl Adams — 5-11 G — L.B. Landry (2025)
The quick, confident junior guard was the head of the snake for the Buccaneers with his team-high 13 points, including both the team’s 3-point makes, and lead ball-handling. He also snatched at least two steals of a tenacious overall performance in that regard by Landry, whose flurries of steals helped the team gain some early control and keep within striking distance into the final minutes.
Kobe Butler Kobe Butler 6'7" | SF Archbishop Shaw | 2025 State LA — 6-7 F — Archbishop Shaw (2025)
The Eagles defended well on the perimeter, but the big junior was the anchor with at least seven blocked shots, including four early on to set the tone inside. Butler also grabbed 11 rebounds — with not only his size, but also a tenacious motor and typically good positioning — and a steal and scored three second-half points.
Christian Creppel Christian Creppel 6'5" | SF Archbishop Shaw | 2024 State LA — 6-5 F — Archbishop Shaw (2024)
The senior captain had trouble breaking free or getting field goals to fall in the first half, but still picked his spots to attack and got to the free-throw line for five points at the break. He then added five points from the field during the 12-0 run on his way to a game-high 18 points and team-high nine rebounds.
Lawrence Hall — 6-1 G — L.B. Landry (2024)
One of Adams’ key running mates in the backcourt, the bigger Hall didn’t shy away from physical play inside on his attacks of the rim or the boards with his nine points and nine rebounds, along with a game-high seven steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Kayden Joseph Kayden Joseph 6'6" | SF L.B. Landry | 2024 State LA — 6-6 F — L.B. Landry (2024)
The big man in the Buccaneers’ guard-oriented lineup, Joseph finished with eight points and 10 rebounds with a good combination of his effort battling Butler on the boards and also showing some crafty post work with the ball in his hands.
Aidan LaSalle — 5-11 G — Archbishop Shaw (2024)
LaSalle was the exception to the first-half perimeter shooting woes for both teams with two of his three looks from beyond the arc falling on his way to eight points at the break and 13 for the night, including an emphatic three-point play in the fourth quarter on a strong finish through contact that felt like an exclamation mark on the victory.
Xavier Meyers Xavier Meyers 6'2" | SG AB Shaw | 2024 State LA — 6-2 G — Archbishop Shaw (2024)
The Eagles defended well outside as a team, but Meyers stood out with his height, length, good lateral quickness and well-timed contests and disruption of Buccaneers jumpers. He blocked two shots and grabbed four rebounds on the night. And he drained a pull-up 3-pointer from the top of the arc during the 12-0 run
