Continue ReadingIt is hard to believe we are a few days away from February! Before the season gets away from me, I decided to make a list of players that I need to watch very soon. See below for some of the reasons you and I need to watch these guys hoop before the season ends. We have a nice mix of 11 players from AA, A, and B teams.
25’s That I Need To See
Markus Talley |6’1 G| Mitchell
WHY? I have not had the chance to watch a full game yet this season, but everyone agrees that Talley is crushing it. The Kernels are ranked #1 and only have one loss on the season, Markus is a major reason for all that success. The last I saw, Talley is averaging 17.1 ppg, 6 rpg, 3.7 apg, 49.6 FG%. He is a lights-out lefty shooter, sharply skilled, a student of the game, and a heady player. Markus is not just a shooter/scorer, he has done a great job of creating and making others better. Mr. Talley is high on my list of players to watch in the next month.
Shawn Hammerbeck Shawn Hammerbeck 6'7" | PF Winner | 2025 State SD |6’7 PF| Winner
WHY? I have not seen him yet this year. However, I have watched his film in past years and I have watched the monster in grassroots basketball with Sanford. It looks like Hammerbeck is blowing up as a D1 football recruit. Shawn recently received a football offer from Texas Tech. Any time a player receives an offer from a BIG XII school, you know that they are a special breed of an athlete. Hammerbeck is a beast on the basketball court as well. He is built like a mountain, has great strength & mobility, but he is also skilled with the ball. The Warriors are 8-4 on the season, I am looking forward to watching Winner and Mr. Hammerbeck in the near future.
Kyle Virtue Kyle Virtue 6'5" | PF Custer | 2025 State SD |6’5 PF| Custer
WHY? I watched him this fall at the PH Expo and Mr. Virtue looked good. I was impressed with his finishing, hands, hustle, how hard he ran the floor, and how he fought for position around the basket. Kyle started the year hot and played very well at the Lakota Nation Invitational in Rapid City. The Wildcats are 9-4 on the season and Kyle is averaging 17 ppg, 7 rpg, and shooting 45 FG%. Virtue is showing off his strength in the post and he has been carving up teams when running/making plays in transition. Kyle is easily a top 5 baller in the Black Hills Conference.
Layke Wold Layke Wold 5'10" | CG Chester Area | 2025 State SD |5’10 G| Chester
WHY? He is an excellent shooter, especially from beyond the 3-point arc. I watched Wold this summer on the Prep Hoops Circuit and he shot it impressively. Layke moves well without the ball, reacts to the D, and shoots it smoothly & quickly. He is not the biggest player on the court but he plays fearlessly and with confidence. Layke is having a good season in school ball, has shot it well, and has improved his attacking game. I have not heard his stats/numbers but I imagine that Wold is putting up quality production.
Ryan Heinert Ryan Heinert 6'3" | SG Sturgis | 2025 State SD |6’3 G| Sturgis
WHY? I have not had the chance to watch him outside of film review, but everyone tells me about his explosive scoring and dangerous shooting ability. The Scoopers have won three in a row and they play St. Thomas Moore this coming Tuesday. STM plays a tough & disciplined brand of defense, this will be a good test & barometer for Heinert & the Scoopers. The last I heard, Ryan is averaging 19 ppg and shooting a hot 37 3FG%. He has extended range, so defenses need to guard him all the way out the the VB-line.
Landon Dulaney Landon Dulaney 6'1" | CG Brandon Valley | 2025 State SD |6’1 G| Brandon Valley
WHY? Because he is a superstar, multi-sport athlete. Dulaney has the speed to be a State Champion in Track, the athleticism to play D1 football, and is coming into his own as a lead guard for the Lynx basketball team. Landon recently picked up football offers from UNI and USD! I know that athleticism with translate over to the basketball court. I want to watch Dulaney hoop, see his skill level, and shooting ability. The Lynx have a 6-3 record and they should be one of the tougher teams in AA come tournament time.
Logan Collette Logan Collette 5'11" | SG Dakota Valley | 2025 State SD |5’11 G| Dakota Valley
WHY? I have not had the chance of watching him yet but I hear reports about Logan being a deadeye shooter. He is a winner, that’s for sure. Logan was part of the program that won multiple State Championships and had the nation’s longest-winning street. This season, Collette is averaging 11.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3 apg, and 1.1 spg. If you leave Mr. Collette alone, he will make you pay from 3-point land! Opposing teams have to account for his shooting ability and this opens up space & angles for the other Panthers to do work.
Myles Meyer Myles Meyer 6'7" | PF Parker | 2025 State SD |6’7 F| Parker
WHY? PHD saw him play this past spring and we were intrigued. First, you notice him because of his height, and next because of his size & big frame. He has a lot to work with! Myles shoots & scores with a soft touch. I love his baby hook shot and he shoots a high percentage from the charity stripe. Meyer rebounds well on both ends of the floor and he can protect the rim. I want to see how Myles has improved since I saw him last. If he improves his quickness, I think college coaches will want to take a serious look.
Jamre Tiger Jamre Tiger 5'9" | CG Sioux Falls Roosevelt | 2025 State SD |5’9 G| Sioux Falls Roosevelt
WHY? I watched him this fall and Tiger was impressive! Jamre is lightning quick and he plays with great pace. He scores in transition, pushes the tempo, forces TO’s on D, creates for others with great vision, and is a marksman from beyond the arc. Jamre has come on strong as of late and has had some splashy scoring games. The Rough Riders are 8-3 on the season, have scary talent on their roster, and if they make a postseason run, Tiger will be a big part of it.
Blair Ham Blair Ham 6'2" | SF Lemmon | 2025 State SD |6’2 G| Lemmon
WHY? The Cowboys are having a fantastic season and have an impressive 10-1 record. Lemmon’s only loss comes from Glen-Ullin-Hebron (ND) who is a Top 10 team in ND Class B. I have not had a chance to watch the Cowboys yet this season, but I checked them out last season and Blair looked like a stud! He is a talented 3-point shooter who knocks them down off the bounce and dribble. He is also effective in the high post. Ham is also a highly productive rebounder. PHD recommends that you watch the Cowboys and Mr. Ham this month before the end of the regular season.
Teigen Wormstadt Teigen Wormstadt 6'1" | SG Sturgis Brown | 2025 State SD |6’1 G| Sturgis
WHY? He is an exciting & hardworking athlete. Teigen is averaging 8 points and 4 rebounds per game. He continues progressing with his jump shot but his “go-to” is getting to the rim off the bounce. Wormstadt has done a really good job of pro-hopping into the lane and finishing strong at the iron. He is also a great on-the-ball defender and often times guards the other team’s best offensive threat. The Scoopers are on a 3-game win streak and they play at St. Thomas More on Tuesday.
