One. Guard Play. Farmington has a lot of size, a lot of fight, and a lot of tough players but the fear has always been their shortage of guard depth. Last night that shortage was countered by the playmaking of Chaska freshman Tyler Forrest Tyler Forrest 6'2" | PG Chaska | 2027 State MN and the scoring on the wing of fellow freshman Kalin Jochum Kalin Jochum 6'3" | SF Chaska | 2027 State MN , Jimmy Coddington Jimmy Coddington 6'3" | SG Chaska | 2025 State MN and Ashton Blake. Forrest did a good job of penetrating the lane and moving the ball to the win while Jochum and Coddington not only scored but also moved the ball in a way that Farmington could not close out to.
Two. Coddington for 30 (27). I had junior Jimmy Coddington Jimmy Coddington 6'3" | SG Chaska | 2025 State MN for 10 of 18 shooting with seven threes which of course adds up to 27 points and not my reported 30. Not sure how I made that math mistake but I did. Whatever the case, Coddington stretched the Farmington defense to a point that they were able to extend to and he knocked out momentum building threes throughout the game. And it wasn’t just the 27 points, I thought Coddington took good shots and was also smart moving the basketball with four assists. The junior is scoring 14 points a game and last night made a name for himself that will lead to all teams playing the Hawks knowing they need to locate number 13.
Three. Chaska Frosh. Not only did Chaska beat a top ten team, they did it with two freshmen playing huge roles against a veteran Farmington squad. The Tigers did not have a guard that could consistently keep Forrest from getting a dribble or two inside the arc. The Tiger help was there as were the shot contesting on ball defenders, but Forrest was able to locate teammates and put them in good spots that the Farmington defense was not able to recover to. Forrest also did a great job of making the initial read or the snap reversal read and then moving to his screen away or screen down. Forrest had five assists but his passing value was far greater than that number shows throughout possessions. And Jochum scored his 13 points on five of six shooting seemingly hitting key shots at the right time throughout the game.
Four. Brandon Hrncir Brandon Hrncir 6'8" | PF Farmington | 2024 State MN for 24. I admire the way USF bound Brandon Hrncir Brandon Hrncir 6'8" | PF Farmington | 2024 State MN tried to shoulder the scoring load when his team needed points. He was able to hit two threes (with a long two made as well), he attacked for scores, scored twice in transition and used his size to score around the rim. He scored 24 points but needed 23 shots to get there as Farmington’s halfcourt offense was not able to generate any guard playmaking. Farmington was able to use their size for a fair amount of deep lane attempts but their success rate across the line-up was poor. And any possession that got deep in the shot clock seemed to be Hrncir attempting to complete in a tough way. He also had nine boards.
Five. Chanhassen? Had I read the Hub schedule more carefully I would not have driven to Chaska to see a talent show going on. It was not in the main gym, the Chaska main gym had one person shooting in it with the bleachers pulled into the wall. Something is obviously wrong with the Hawks bleachers based on the appearance of the non-used gym and the game being at Chanhassen. Not sure why they have to use the Chan gym but that is where Chaka played this game.
