When you think of both of these teams you might think that they are teams that run crazy sets and score at will but in reality both teams are built on a defensive foundation. Here is the breakdown.
Lowe is one of the best on ball defenders out there in teh state and he proved it last night as he did as good a job as anyone can do against Ace Reiser Ace Reiser 6’0″ | PG Alta | 2024 State UT . He was slowed down a bit early in the game as he took a knee to the leg but he shook it off and shadowed Reiser all night and just made it difficult for him to get loose. The impressive thing about his defense is that his only jog was to stay in-front. He did not gamble or try and steal the ball, he was just a shadow and he did a great job. When you look at next level play prospects that can score come by the dozens but prospects that can defend at a high level are rare.
Johnson was playing his tail off as he racked up block after block and he was altering shots in the perimeter. The crazy thing about his high level defense was that he did not get into foul trouble all while being very active on the glass and in the paint. The ability to switch from 1-5 at the high school level really is a game changer and that is what Jaxon brings to the table. Excited to see him suit up at the college level when he is ready to play.
Game Changers
Watching Compton work was really fun to see, because you can see him move around to get position, you can see him start to make moves but not commit to an area. The way he was tracking the ball down was just beautiful. He probably extended plays by getting 6+ offensive rebounds and he is no slouch when it comes to shooting and scoring. He was a big time game changer.
Smylie was actually a big presence in the post. He might not have the height but he has the skills and the moves. When Olympus involves him in the offense with some post touches it really opens things up. Last night they went to him a few times and he had great looks. With some film reiew they could find some positivity in last nights game.
Highlights
Shooting
Deep ball shooting will always be the equalizer and these two players could really blow things out of the water.
In the defensive coverage that Olympus was in Dash was open a lot on the wing skip. He had a few good looks that went in and out and he had some that fell and where back breakers. Dash in a catch and shoot is great and when he is just playing free he is very dangerous.
Last night wasn’t his best shooting night but he did show grit trying to work off the picks he was setting. Olympus has a few screen the screener and Dutch got open butthe pressure on the ball made that pass late or they did not see him. If you throw in a roll from the second screener you will give more options to get layups or open looks for Dutch. Getting him the right matchup could really help him get comfortable out in the perimeter. This kid shoots the ball so well that when he gets it going he could really be an impact on the game for sure.
