Continue ReadingMurray had a tremendous fall showcase season in which he showed himself to be one of the best pure shooters in the state, an aspect of his game that will be very valuable for a Saints team that lacks shooting (at least heading into the season). His shot wasn’t falling in their season opening win over Charles City (2-10 3P), but he found other ways to impact the game, finishing with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal to go with his 12 points. He showed good ball-handling skills, looking comfortable with the ball in his hands against pressure, and he displayed impressive court vision and passing instincts. He’s also not afraid to stick his nose in on the glass. His shooting is his most valuable asset, but he showed that there is more to his game than just shooting the ball.
Highlights
A heady lead guard who never gets sped up, Pino plays more like a senior than a sophomore, showing a lot of poise against constant pressure when he had the ball in his hands. He came off the bench to provide Xavier with a steadying presence in the backcourt, getting his teammates involved, knocking down his open shots, and icing the game away at the free throw line. He finished with 10 points on 2-6 3P (4-4 FT), 2 assists, a steal, and a block, and most importantly – he didn’t turn the ball over.
Highlights
Daye may be one of the fastest players in the state going end-to-end with the ball in his hands. He’s a blur in the open court, routinely beating opposing players down the floor and getting to the rim in transition. He’s a really good ball-handler who pairs his handles with a dynamic first step to blow by defenders in the halfcourt setting as well, and he puts consistent pressure on the player who is guarding him, looking to get downhill constantly. He came off the bench in Johnston’s win over Prairie and made a major impact on both ends of the floor, finishing with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, and a block.
The freshman will go through some growing pains this season in the MVC, but he’s starting already for Prairie and is providing the Hawks with a dynamic shooter. He moves really well without the ball in his hands and has an extremely quick release off the catch. He has unlimited range and his ability to space the floor is very beneficial for some of his teammates who are better attacking the rim. He’s slight of frame, of course, but he does a good job creating extra space to help get his shot off, and he sees the floor very well. He went 3-7 from behind the arc in their loss to Johnston while also dishing out 3 assists.
Jeremiah Washpun
Jeremiah Washpun
Washpun has a chance to be pretty special for Liberty. He’s a gifted guard who can get his teammates involved at a high clip or get to his own shot pretty much whenever he wants. He oozes with confidence and moves differently than most other freshmen, knowing where he wants to get, how to get there, and then doing it. He has a strong mid-range game, confidence in his jumper, great handles, and a fantastic feel for the game. Defensively he gambles, perhaps a bit too much, but he was also a freshman playing in his first varsity game, and he’ll learn from those types of mistakes. He’s a coachable young guard with a ton of potential who finished with 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-4 3P), 4 rebounds, and 3 assists coming off the bench in Liberty’s win over CCA.
