Continue ReadingA steadying presence in the backcourt for the Lions, Havlik is a pass-first point guard who uses his great size (6-4) to see above the defense and find open shooters or cutting teammates. He does a great job keeping his dribble alive against pressure, and he doesn’t get sped up, playing within himself and limiting mistakes. He also uses his length effectively on the defensive end, getting into passing lanes and making life difficult for opposing ball handlers. He had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal in the Lions’ narrow loss to Senior last Tuesday night.
Williams had one of the best summers of any player in the state, and he has carried that momentum into the high school season, putting together another dominant performance in Senior’s overtime win over Linn-Mar. An athletic 6-6 lefty with great footwork, excellent touch, and the ability to finish through contact at ridiculous angles, Williams put up 23 points on 10-15 shooting (1-1 3P, 2-2 FT) to go with 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. He is in constant motion on the offensive end and does a great job sealing his defender and making quick decisions on his post catches.

A do-it-all wing who is a great teammate and the ultimate “glue guy”, Darbouze has stepped into the starting lineup for Linn-Mar this season after barely playing varsity minutes last year and he has been extremely productive. He’s an athletic 6-4 wing who can defend multiple positions, contribute on the glass, keep the ball moving, and knock down open shots. He made a pair of huge 3-pointers in the second half of Linn-Mar’s loss to Senior en route to finishing with 6 points and 4 assists while playing really strong defense.
Kennedy has become one of my favorite players over the last few years because I’ve seen the crazy amount of work that he has put into improving, and the improvement is definitely noticeable. He has turned himself into a player who can help a college program with his ability to do a little bit of everything on the floor. Nothing that he does is going to blow you away, but he does all the little things that a lot of players don’t want to do, and he should be rewarded as a result. He had 6 points on 3-5 shooting, 2 assists, and a steal in Senior’s win over Linn-Mar.
Highlights
A lightning-quick guard who puts constant pressure on opposing teams with his speed on both ends of the floor, McCain made some huge plays in the fourth quarter of Decorah’s comeback win over Hudson, taking over the game on both ends of the floor when the Vikings needed him. He didn’t have a great shooting night overall (5-15 FG, 0-4 3P), but he found other ways to contribute until it was his time to shine, finishing with 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals with no turnovers. He has a great feel for the game, is a really good ball-handler, and he has an explosive first step that he uses to blow by defenders and get to the cup.
A 6-5 wing who is one of the best pure shooters in the state, Bockman scored 19 points on 7-15 shooting (3-7 3P, 2-3 FT) to go with 6 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal, and a block in Decorah’s win over Hudson last Thursday night. He moves exceptionally well without the ball in his hands and is always ready to fire off the catch with a quick release and plenty of range. The form on his jumper is picturesque, he’s always balanced, and he has really improved as a ball-handler, allowing him to take advantage of overly aggressive closeouts to attack the rim for finishes or to find open teammates.

Davis has been one of the most productive players in 2A basketball over the last few years, and he showed exactly why he’s so dangerous in Hudson’s loss to Decorah, scoring 25 points on 7-15 shooting (11-13 FT) with 16 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. A 6-5 forward with great footwork, soft hands and excellent touch around the rim, his constant activity on both ends of the floor make him a difficult player to keep off the stat sheet. He showed some ability to create off the dribble for himself from the top of the key, but a majority of his damage came off of great off-ball movement and strong work on the offensive glass.

A talented 6-1 combo guard who can play with or without the ball in his hands, Ugrin does a great job filling the lane on the break and getting easy looks in transition. He has a smooth stroke from the arc both off the dribble and the catch, and while he shot just 1-4 from behind the arc in the Pirates’ loss to Decorah, he had a few rim in-and-out, preventing him from having an explosive scoring night. He still finished with 12 points on 3-8 shooting (5-5 FT) and 3 assists, showing good court vision and awareness on that end of the floor.

A 6-0 lead guard with a good feel for the game and great court vision, Olsen is a pass-first point guard who does a great job limiting turnovers, getting his teammates involved, and taking shots when he gets open, quality looks. He plays well in ball-screen action, turning the corner tight and getting into the teeth of the defense where he can either finish through contact or find open teammates for layups or jumpers on the wing. He had 9 points on 4-8 shooting, 2 rebounds, and 5 assists in Hudson’s loss to Decorah.
