Here’s a look at players that stuck out in the game:
Webb led all scorers with 20 points in this game. He did so as a three-level threat. The senior has developed his game through his prep career and become a dangerous player on both ends of the court. His length and versatility often contribute to him taking advantage of mismatches, allowing him to pull taller defenders away from the hoop and post up smaller ones.
Kampman is a dominant defensive presence in the middle of the paint for Lightning. It’s not just his length, he has a great feel for playing defense. He boasts excellent timing when blocking or altering shots, and he sees the court well, allowing him to help teammates. The senior paced Liberty with nine rebounds and chipped in four points 0n 2 of 4 shooting from the field in this one.
Stephen Cain
Stephen Cain
Cain stuck out when I saw him last week against Iowa City West as a solid two-way guard. He handles the ball well and he has a pure-looking shot. He connected on 1 of 2 attempts from behind the arc in this contest, finishing with 11 points in a low-scoring game.
Coapstick is a lightning-quick guard and that speed was needed on Friday with the quickness City’s backcourt. The Liberty junior helped get his squad into its offense with his strong handle and penetrating ability. He also contributed strong on-ball defense in helping slow down the Little Hawks. Coapstick connected on 3 of 6 field goal attempts, including 1 for 2 treys in finishing with six points.
Wright has been the glue for the Little Hawks during the last few seasons. The senior marries his speed and quickness with a strong understanding of the game. He impacts the game with his hard-nosed play at the top of the City defense. When he has the ball, he breaks down defenders regularly and changes speeds well. Even when his shot was off, like it was on Friday, he affects the game positively.
Kristian Freeman
Kristian Freeman
Freeman stands out for his high activity level on both ends of the court. In a game with a lot of tall players, the 6-footer led everybody with 10 rebounds. The senior crashes hard, and he pops off of the court quickly. Freeman also contributed six points with aggressive dribble penetration.
Luckett looks like a player we’ll be hearing more from during the next two seasons. The talented sophomore plays under control for his relative lack of experience on this level. He shows good handles and plays with his head up. He’s a willing and able defender. Luckett illustrates good form on his jumper. He knocked down 3 of 6 three-point attempts and tied for the team lead with 11 points on Friday.
