The Indiana High School Basketball season is just around the corner and we at Prep Hoops Indiana will be pumping out a ton of previews right up until the opening tip. We have individually spotlighted 100+ schools across the state, gave out watch lists for each class, and will have several other previews in the coming days. This week, while Brandon Ramsey will be will be handling the big picture previews, I will be breaking down each class in both the north and south regions by highlighting the best Sectional, top players in the area, state title contenders, and other quick hitters you need to know within the class. For this one, we will breaking down the Class 3A (South).

Best Sectional: Sectional 27

Teams: Brebeuf Jesuit, Guerin Catholic, Heritage Christian, Indianapolis Chatard, Indianapolis Herron, Indianapolis Shortridge

Reason: Just like we had in the 3A north, this is another Sectional in 3A that could be a real tossup. There are multiple teams here that could end up winning this Sectional with a couple them, Brebeuf Jesuit and Guerin Catholic, having a chance to make a deep run in the postseason at get to the state finals. The most talented player in this group is without question Butler guard commit [player_tooltip player_id='1278639' first='Evan' last='Haywood'], who exploded as a top tier 2024 prospect over the spring/summer. His running mate, [player_tooltip player_id='1275802' first='Reis' last='Butcher'], is also a guard that boosts the talent here in Sectional 27. What also makes Sectional 27 the toughest is because it has arguably the favorite to win 3A State in here in Guerin Catholic, who came up just short from winning it all last season. The Golden Eagles pretty much return all of their key players from last year led by a group seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1547883' first='Dylan' last='Murans'], [player_tooltip player_id='1386181' first='Jack' last='Cherry'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1275817' first='Robert' last='Sorensen']. As far as a sleeper team here, that would belong to Indianapolis Chatard who is always a tough team to play against and sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='1560973' first='Ethan' last='Roseman'] will be looking to take a big leap this season. Sectional 27 is going to be a dog fight and whoever comes out of it can absolutely make a run at state.

State Contenders

Evansville Bosse - The Bulldogs are one of a few teams out of Evansville that could have a chance at making a state championship run. Although they only finished 13-11 and lost in the first round of Sectionals to Evansville Mater Dei, they return one of the top lead guards in the state in [player_tooltip player_id='1158192' first='Taray' last='Howell']. The 5'7 point guard brings back 23.2 points per game as a junior and has been one of the more talked about guards in the in-state 2024 class after having a big summer. Other guys like [player_tooltip player_id='2089944' first='Chris' last='Glover'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2053669' first='Tizaun' last='Tomlinson'] will also be key players for Bosse, as well.

Guerin Catholic - The Golden Eagles are probably the odds-on favorite in many people's eyes to make it back to state and actually win the entire thing this season. Leading scorer [player_tooltip player_id='1275817' first='Robert' last='Sorensen'] is back after averaging 14.4 points per game a year ago and everyone knows the talent that [player_tooltip player_id='1547883' first='Dylan' last='Murans'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1386181' first='Jack' last='Cherry'] bring to the table for Guerin Catholic. Keep an eye on 6'5″ junior [player_tooltip player_id='2053658' first='Bryson' last='Cardinal'] to make a large impact as well. The Golden Eagles were just three points away from winning it all last season. Will they close it out this time around?

Greensburg - The Pirates are always a tough team when it comes to the 3A south. While they did lose a lot of talent from last year's team and legendary head coach Stacy Meyer retired, they return enough to make another potential deep run this season. Head coach Shaun Busick comes in as the new head coach and brings in ton of experience along with him. As far as players, look for duo [player_tooltip player_id='1297041' first='Jack' last='McKinsey'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1158211' first='Addison' last='Barnes-Pettit'] to be the top guys there along with Coach Busick's son who joins the Pirates, [player_tooltip player_id='1293348' first='Drew' last='Busick'].

Heritage Hills - The [player_tooltip player_id='1297118' first='Trent' last='Sisley'] factor is a legit thing and when you have a player like him on your roster, you almost automatically become a contender at any level. The Patriots were upset in Sectionals last year by Washington but this season, Sectional 31 looks to be theirs's to win. It has always been about getting help around Sisley and this season there looks to be just that with guys like [player_tooltip player_id='1560951' first='Jake' last='Prior'] being able to take pressure off of him. Heritage Hills is a sneaky team to come out of the 3A south.

Brebeuf Jesuit - The Braves are also a team that many have as the favorite to make it all the way to 3A state this season. After a fantastic spring/summer that saw his recruitment blow up, the 6'4″ Butler commit [player_tooltip player_id='1278639' first='Evan' last='Haywood'] is back after averaging 14.3 points per game. His running mate [player_tooltip player_id='1275802' first='Reis' last='Butcher'] is back too and brings a lot of talent at the perimeter on both ends of the floor. Brebeuf Jesuit has go through Guerin Catholic to get on a big run, but they have the talent to do so.

Evansville Memorial - While only going 14-9 last season, the Tigers of Evansville Memorial brings back an extremely good core of players led by one of the best big men in the state, [player_tooltip player_id='1578479' first='Tucker' last='Tornatta'], whos is a walking double-double. They also have one of their top scorers returning in [player_tooltip player_id='1539999' first='Luke' last='Ellspermann'] who brings back 16.0 ppg from his sophomore season. Other guys like [player_tooltip player_id='2053670' first='Asher' last='Evans'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1560950' first='Dylen' last='Kendrick'] are also going to be a key part in this group making a deep run. Lot of potential in this group.

Scottsburg - It helps to have a 'big three' at the 3A level and that is exactly what the Warriors have this season in [player_tooltip player_id='1401893' first='Kody' last='Clancy'], [player_tooltip player_id='1276470' first='Jack' last='Miller'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1578484' first='Wyatt' last='Zellers']. Clancy put up a team-leading 16.8 points and 4.3 assists per game last season. Miller, a 6'5″ wing, added 15.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game on impressive 56.5%/46.6%/84.1% shooting splits while Zellers, a 6'9″ forward, averaged 12.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. You also have throw in senior shooting guard [player_tooltip player_id='1295314' first='Caden' last='Richardson'] as another big piece here. Scottsburg has all the pieces to make a deep run this season.
