We’ll take a look at the 13 teams in alphabetical order.
Akron
Akron is 4-0 and projected to be one of the top teams in the MAC. Coming off a 77-71 win over FIU in the Cayman Islands Classic Basketball Tournament, the Zips play Utah State in the semifinals of the event.
Top in state performers: Enrique Freeman, Cleveland St Martin De Poores, 15.8 PPG 13.5 RPG, Nate Johnson, Lakota East, 10.5 PPG, Greg Tribble, Winton Woods, 8.0 PPG, Shammah Scott, Shaker Heights, 7.8 PPG
Bowling Green
Under a new coaching staff, Bowling Green started the season 2-0 but have dropped their last two. The Falcons head to Canada for three games in Montreal starting the day after Thanksgiving where they’ll face Western Kentucky, Lipscomb and Canisius.
Top in state performers: Sam Towns, Pickerington Central, 6.5 PPG 6.3 RPG, Anthony McComb, Dayton Trotwood Madison, 5.0 PPG
Cincinnati
Heading into their first season of Big 12 play, the Bearcats have started the season 4-0 and play only one non-conference game outside the city of Cincinnati this season. The Bearcats could be near the top in the country for most wins heading into the new year.
Top in state performers: Cj Frederick, Covington Catholic (hometown of Cincinnati), 7.0 PPG 53.3% 3-point
Cleveland State
The Vikings sit at 3-2 and have a marquee early season victory over in state MAC powerhouse Ohio at home. Their only losses have come on the road to Duquesne and Eastern Michigan and they have two home games before hitting the road against in state conference rival Youngstown State.
Top in state performers: Jayson Woodrich, Beachwood, 8.8 PPG 56.5% 3-point, Ramar Pryor, STVM, 3.2 PPG
Dayton
After taking a loss to Northwestern on the road, Dayton went to the Charleston Classic and defeated LSU and St John’s before falling to Houston in the championship game. The Flyers have one remaining game Vs a high major opponent when they take on Cincinnati on December 16th.
Top in state performers: No points scored by an in-state prospect this season
Kent State
After winning the MAC tournament and making the NCAA tournament last season, Kent State has high expectations for this season. A thrilling double overtime loss to currently nationally ranked James Madison has been their marquee game of their 3-2 season thus far. The Golden Flashes have two trips out West, one to play Oregon and one to play St Mary’s in late December before starting MAC play January 2nd.
Top in state performers: Jalen Sullinger, Thomas Worthington, 17.7 PPG, Cli’Ron Hornbeak, Toledo St Francis, 10.0 PPG 5.7 RPG, Giovanni Santiago, Cincinnati Hughes, 6.7 PPG, 6.7 APG
Miami (OH)
After starting the season 0-2, Miami took both games of the Miami classic against Coppin State and Eastern Illinois. The Redhawks make trips to Columbus and Dayton to take on the Buckeyes and Raiders before starting MAC play in January.
Top in state performers: Eian Elmer, Cincinnati Taft, 2.5 PPG 2.8 RPG
Ohio
The Bobcats sit at 2-1 with their lone loss coming on the road to in-state foe Cleveland State. Ohio returns to the court the day after Thanksgiving with three games in the Bahamas with a strong mid major field, their first game there is against George Washington.
Top in state performers: Elmore James, Brush, 14.3 PPG 5.3 RPG, Aj Clayton, Philo, 13.0 PPG, 60% 3-point, Ajay Sheldon, Dublin Coffman, 3.3 PPG
Ohio State
A competitive home loss to Texas A&M is the only blemish on the Buckeyes early season schedule who look much improved from last season. They have remaining non-conference games with Alabama, UCLA and either Oregon or Santa Clara alongside a loaded Big 10 schedule.
Top in state performers: Dale Bonner, Shaker Heights, 5.0 PPG, Evan Mahaffey, Cincinnati Moeller, 3.8 PPG 3.5 RPG
Toledo
The Rockets are 3-0 with a tough one point road win At Wright State as the marquee early season victory. They head out to Nevada to play three games in four days starting tomorrow. A battle with Missouri Valley power Indiana State is the game to watch out west. Finally, a trip to Morgantown to play West Virginia wraps up their non-conference slate.
Top in state performers: Ra’Heim Moss, Springfield, 15.7 PPG 6.7 RPG, Javan Simmons, Gahanna, 12.0 PPG 63.6% FG, Ben Wight, Thomas Worthington, 3.3 PPG 2.7 RPG
Wright State
A tough early season schedule has Wright State at 0-3 but this is a team that can score the ball in bunches and averaging over 78 PPG this season. With some winnable games at the Gulf Coast Showcase mixed with a couple games Vs non Division I opponents, look for the Raiders to build some momentum heading into conference play.
Top in state performers: Tanner Holden, Wheelersburg, 18.3 PPG 93.8% FT, Aj Braun, Bishop Fenwick, 9.3 PPG 6.0 RPG, Brandon Noel, Chillicothe, 7.3 PPG 6.7 RPG, Drey Carter, Westerville South, 5.3 PPG 72.7% FG
Xavier
After two home wins to start the Musketeers have been battle tested in their following three games. A trip to second ranked Purdue was a tough loss then a west coast visit to Las Vegas saw Xavier split with Washington and St Mary’s. Houston visits the Cintas Center before the highly anticipated rivalry game with Cincinnati.
Top in state performers: Dailyn Swain, Columbus Africentric, 5.8 PPG 1.8 APG
Youngstown State
The final team to break down are the Penguins of Youngstown State. After dropping the first two on the road, YSU has won three straight at home including two Vs in state non-Division I programs. They have remaining non-conference visits to Dayton and Athens to face the Flyers and Bobcats respectively. Those games are sandwiched in between two horizon league games in mid-December.
Top in state performers: Brandon Rush, Warrensville Heights, 13.4 PPG, Ej Farmer, Cleveland Heights, 6 PPG
