The event signaled the start of the high school basketball season and featured 12 teams and 6 games. Several players used the event to make a name for themselves. Here’s a look at some additional new players that made a name for themselves from the event.
I saw Durant earlier in the week and was impressed with the attitude that he brought to the team. He showed a lot of dawg both then and on Saturday. The PG competes hard, and gives his Eldorado squad a key player to lean on throughout the season.
If you want to get on the radar, do what Lewis did, make game winning plays. The power guard came up with back to back steals to close out a competitive game against Chaparral, giving his Canyon Springs squad an opening day victory.
It wasn’t the best showing for Cheyenne, but I thought Boston was a bright spot. He’s a long big that runs the floor well, showing the potential to impact games with his effort and energy.
Fink will be counted on to grow up fast if Meadows is going to contend in 3A. I thought today was an excellent learning exprience for him. The guard showed a good next play menatlity, bouncing back from a few mental mistakes, to make some key plays for his team, including knocking down multiple jumpers in the game.
Mitchell needs to get some love for what he did for the Spartans on Saturday. Thought his on ball defense was key, to allowing the team to play the style that they want to play. He played hard, but contributed more than intangibles, showing good offensive skill, scoring the ball off drives while knocking down a three as well.
Brown stood out because of his size and skill. In a game, littered with bigs, the wing utilized a quick first jump to get a couple of offensive rebounds, scoring around the rim off putbacks.
First time I’ve seen JSC play, and I was impressed. He has a lot of PG tools, including a handle and a good wiggle. Was impressed with his vision and passing accuracy, as the guard was able to make several nice hook passes cross court, hitting teammates on time and on target in the process.
Salazar was recently named as one of my top shooters in the state. He didn’t disapoint. The sniper made three three’s in the game, including a crucial fourth quarter one to give the Falcons seperation. The senior guard lived up to his sharpshooter reputation.
Badger put his hat into the ring for one of the top glue guys in the state. It seemed like every play he made was a big one. He had a huge offensive rebound, And 1 putback right before the half, that gave the Rams a huge lift heading into the locker room. He’s the type of player that Championships teams have, an unselfish hard playing, extra effort peformer.
