With as many talented players in the state this season, it is important that we give you a list of names to keep an eye on for the season, which is what I will be doing with each position in the 2024, 2025, and 2026 classes. The point of my list is to give you a preview of some the players that are maybe overlooked a little, still on the college recruiting board, or guys in general that deserve to have eyes on them. With that said, here are point guards to watch for in the 2025 class this season.
Couto has been one of the top lead guard that has seen his stock rise a quite a bit in the in-state 2025 class. He comes into this season as arguably the best player on a Carmel team that may look a little bit different than what we have seen in the past few years. Couto is an excellent outside shooter, has great ball handles, and has flashed the ability to play either on or off of the ball. He should be the No. 1 guy at times for Carmel and has a legit chance to lead the team in scoring this season. This could be a breakout season for Couto.
Rogelio ‘Papi’ Rivera is starting to prove to be a top tier guard in the in-state 2025 class. He is often billed as microwave scorer due to the fact of how hot he can get scoring the ball and the fact that every shot he takes, you feel like it is going to go in. He has the ball-handling ability to create separation and get his shot off from any spot on the floor. Rivera plays with such smoothness and IQ and the team around him really benefits from it. Watch for him to put up high volume numbers all season long for North Central.
Ward Jr. comes into his junior season as one of the players from last season to lead Indianapolis Lutheran to win the Class 1A State Championship and he will be looking to do so again. He is one of the most explosive athletes in the state and is excellent off of the dribble, elevates very well at the end of his drives, and can bother opposing ball handlers with his on-ball defense. He should be on the radar of college coaches right now at all levels. Expect a big junior season.
Highlights
Jack Smiley Jack Smiley 6’2″ | PG Valparaiso | 2025 State IN ‘s stock is rising and rising at such a quick rate it feels like. At 6’2, Smiley is a left guard that can really knockdown the deep ball and has ability to create his own shot from the perimeter and attack the basket hard. Although he is not always the most consistent player, when he is on there is no question about his D1 potential and what he could bring to a backcourt of a team. As long as he stays aggressive on the offensive end and proves himself as a true defender, a breakout season will easily come. Keep a close eye on the Valpo guard.
