It brought some of the top 64 prospects in the NWO area together to compete against each other in an invite-only showcase. It had over 50 college scouts in attendance and multiple media members. I will put out four articles about this event. My first in the 2023 Toledo Top 64 First Team.
West was the top prospect in the gym entering the day and he made sure to prove that. His skill was on a different level than almost everyone else that was there. He has great ball handling in traffic and showed phenomenal decision-making. He always found the open guy when the defense committed too much to him. The game almost seems slow to him. His IQ was really good. He proved he can be a true point guard for your team. He is getting better and better athletically. He also brought a ton of energy to his team. He was always cheering on the bench and when in the game took great command of the game. He was great on Sunday.
Cotton was another high-level prospect in the event and showed me great improvements to his game. He is already known for his height and length for a guard but he has improved on that great foundation. He has gotten quick and stronger athletically. He was taking people off the dribble a lot more. Was able to shake the defense down and get to the rim. His 1 on 1 game now is extremely difficult to stop. He moves very smoothly as well. Superfluid and rhythmic player. His shoot was pure from beyond the arc. He was scoring a ton, but this time from everywhere on the court.
Neikamp was great on Sunday. He was one of the top players in the event and he impressed a ton. He is super tall and long but the definition of a modern big. He moves so fluidly and well and has some really long strides. He plays very hard and runs the floor well. He was super effective going over each shoulder in the post. He made a ton of blocks and rebounds. He also had one of the prettiest shots in the event. He was butter from beyond the arc. The rotation on the ball when he shoots is perfect. He was someone who I had multiple singing their praises about him.
Dawson was someone who came in the event with multiple D2 offers and I bet is going to get more. Dawson started the day kind of slow and was really feeling out how to play with his team. A couple of shots that usually go down didn’t. Then they started to go down and he started to cook. He was great from the midrange. He showed great patience and pivoted to create space for himself. He had great timing on his pull-ups to throw the defense off. He did most of his damage and got going from the midrange and then proceeded to knock down threes which opened the court up for him. He was super aggressive once he got it going and showed some competitive juices. This kid can score in bunches.
Miles has improved so much from the last time I have seen him play. He has unlocked a new part of his game. He has gotten really athletic. He has gotten stronger, quicker, and more vertical leap to his game. He seems to be lighter when he plays. He already had great shooting ability and slashing effectiveness and those are now at a new level due to his athleticism. He had multiple dunks and was causing havoc defensively. Miles is a big-time prospect and will be someone who you will a lot about moving forward.
