We often say “nobody does content and event coverage like Prep Hoops.” That is certainly true, but our team here Indiana prefer to go even further than that. On top of wall-to-wall, border-to-border coverage during the grassroots and high school seasons we also hit the ground running in the fall. This is a great time to hit high school open gyms and get a behind the curtain preview of some of the top teams around the state. These trips also help strength our relationships with the high school coaches and prospects that we cover. On Tuesday, October 10th I had the privilege of attending a workout at Richmond High School. Let’s dive in to what the Red Devils have this season.
Program Profile
In his second season at the helm in Richmond, Coach Billy Wright led the Red Devils to a 16-7 record. He is now 26-22 at Richmond and 57-37 overall in four seasons as a head coach.
Lots of Scoring Coming Back
Returning your top four scorers, including three double-digit scorers, from a 16-win team is a great place to build from. That is the situation Coach Wright has on his hands for year three as the boss at Richmond. 6’5″ wing Cedric Horton Cedric Horton 6'4" | SG Richmond | 2025 State #321 Nation IN is the leading returner after putting up 15.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He continued to blossom over the summer playing his way into a handful of Division I offers from the likes of Miami (OH), Kent State, Toldeo and others. The athletic junior will now have a target around is back as the Red Devils “go-to” man each time out this season. However, his versatility, along with the obvious physical gifts, will make it very hard for opponents to stop him.
It is hard to key on Horton as well when you have two additional players as talented as senior wing Ryder Cate and junior guard Mason Carpenter. Cate is a 6’4″ athlete that averaged 13.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. His ability to rebound from the perimeter, attack closeouts in the half court, and use his size to finish against smaller defenders makes him a difficult matchup next to Horton. Both are athletic, versatile scorers with good size at 6’4″-6’5″. Then, there is Carpenter who will help set the table for the Red Devils in the point guard role. Carpenter averaged 12.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game as a sophomore and will also be one of their best on-ball defenders.
That returning three-headed monster should make Richmond a legitimate contender at the top of the historic North Central Conference and in the always deep Sectional 9 @ Greenfield-Central High School.
Names to Know
Aside from the “Big 3″ there are some intriguing depth pieces to know on the Red Devils this season. 6’2” senior shooter Julien Smith Julien Smith 5'10" | PG Mount Vernon (Fortville) | 2026 State IN and 6’7″ senior center Gavin Haynes were two of the most impressive at Tuesday afternoon’s workout. Other seniors include Deante Smith and Zion Deloney while Jaiden Holland Jaiden Holland 5'10" | SG Richmond | 2025 IN is a junior guard that should factor into the rotation as well.
