While some of the top guys registered didn’t make it until Saturday, there was still plenty to watch, evaluate, and discuss on the first evening of action with event director Brant Minor and legendary coach Larry Doty. Here’s a look at the guys that made an impression on us.
Tanner Overby Tanner Overby 6'2" | PF Lincoln | 2024 State OR (2024 Lincoln)
Overby made an impression with his physical nature as always, driving hard to the hoop and finishing through contact. But the 6-foot-2 senior also knocked down mid-range jumpers and was a force on the defensive end, showing he can be a threat as a shot-blocker either helping off the weak side or chasing guys down on the break. Teams had better watch out for Overby at Lincoln this year.
Cole Javernick Cole Javernick 6'4" | SF Tualatin | 2024 State OR (2024 Tualatin)
One of the most active players on both ends of the floor was Javernick, who was able to utilize his combination of size at 6-foot-4 and athleticism to make plays. He scored both inside and out and showed the versatility to guard guys at multiple positions. We have no doubt he’ll be a serious X-factor at Tualatin this upcoming season.
Asher Vredenburg Asher Vredenburg 5'11" | CG Roseburg | 2024 State OR (2024 Roseburg)
As always, Vredenburg was ultra-aggressive with the basketball. In full-court action, he was constantly pushing the ball up the floor and looking to make plays for himself and others. Never afraid of contact, he charged into the lane and capably got some buckets over and through defenders.
Jullian Lopez (2024 Roseburg)
The likely backcourt partner of Vredenburg at Roseburg will be Lopez, who impressed us with his all-around play on Friday night. The 5-foot-9 point guard was constantly looking to get the ball to open teammates but showed enough offense, whether it was hitting open jumpers or getting to the hoop, to keep defenses honest. Lopez showed good energy on the defensive end as well.
Peyton Reyes Peyton Reyes 5'9" | PG Mountainside | 2025 State OR (2025 Mountainside)
As expected, Reyes was one of the top performers we saw on the evening. The 5-foot-9 junior was his usual self in terms of motor and flying up and down the court and that’s something we’ve become accustomed to. But something else we are getting used to seeing this summer is the confidence he has with his outside jumper as he was sharp with his three-point stroke, which really adds an extra dimension to his game.
Warren Stanton Warren Stanton 6'4" | SF West Linn | 2025 State OR (2025 West Linn)
Stanton didn’t get a ton of playing time for West Linn in their fall league so it was good to see the junior in extended playing time at the showcase. He effectively used his 6-foot-4 length and frame to really make an impact defensively, whether it was guarding the rim inside or harassing guys out on the perimeter. One of a select few guys not always looking for his own offense, he made a number of nice passes to teammates for scores but also showed good touch from the perimeter.
Avery Huston Avery Huston 6'2" | CG Cascade Christian | 2027 State OR (2027 Cascade Christian)
Watching Huston at the event, you’d never guess he was as much as three years younger than many of the participants. The Cascade Christian freshman not only fit right in but excelled, using his athleticism to effectively get to the hoop and finish around the rim but also smoothly knock down threes. We love how he comes out ready to compete each and every time we watch him play.
Braydon Olson (2024 Mark Morris-WA)
Our focus was on in-state kids but it was hard not to notice Olson, who may have been the best player in attendance. The 6-foot-3 lead guard could not be guarded whether it was using his smooth stroke to knock down threes or getting into the lane for buckets near the hoop. Olson not only scored but also dazzled with his passing, sometimes with flair taking the ball behind his back for a couple of moves and flips.
Owen Alleman (2024 Thomas Jefferson-CO)
Another out-of-state guy that caught our attention for sure was Alleman, and not just because of his 6-foot-11 height. The senior post ran the floor, showed great touch around the basket, guarded the rim, and overall played fundamentally sound basketball. There’s no question he’ll need to add strength but there is plenty to work with for this emerging big man.
