After being held in Lansing and a four year stay in Mount Pleasant the camp was held in Grand Rapids this past Saturday. Despite its west side locale. A handful of players from the often overlooked Thumb area stood out. Following are five that caught my eye.
Braylon Frantz Braylon Frantz 6'1" | PG St. Clair | 2026 State MI 6-1 2026 St Clair (pictured) I don’t generally do camp MVP’s. One it’s not my camp. Secondly I can’t catch everything in a multiple court setting. That being said, if I was forced to. Frantz turned in a simply outstanding performance that would have earned the honor. The first thing that catches your eye is the bounce. In a drill station designed more for post players he showed this off. Was able to catch the ball on the block, deliver a drop step, then powerfully dunk with two hands. Even threw down a reverse for good measure. Once the scrimmages started simply had his way on dribble penetration. When he decided to go to the basket, he couldn’t be stopped. As the drill station showed. He is a powerful and assertive finisher at the rim. Didn’t see much evidence of an outside shot. Frankly he didn’t to show it. As 2026 prospect if isn’t there already— it will be. With his height, the point is probably his long term position. Already showing the ability to initiate offensive sets. Also had a few nice drop off passes for buckets. One of my favorites in Michigan’s 2026 class. When it is all said and done. I think he will be near the very top of this talented class.
Zander Nash Zander Nash 6'7" | SF Imlay City | 2025 State MI 6-7 2025 Imaly City After a summer spent on the Prep Hoops Circuit. Nash is a player who I have seen a lot. That said still finds way to impress me. On Saturday appeared more comfortable down low than he has in the past. Still has a slender build but has obviously been putting work in on the block. Showed nice footwork on a ball fake up and under move that had the gym buzzing. Runs the court very well for size. Had a few difficult catches and finishes in transition. Showed the ability to confidently shoot the three. This versatility will be his calling card as he develops. The skill level combined with an excellent academic profile should give him options at the next level.
Evan Trudeau Evan Trudeau 6'1" | SG St. Clair | 2026 State MI 6-1 2026 St Clair Frantz wasn’t the only Saint in the 2026 class doing work on Saturday. Trudeau was showing out the hard way— on the defensive end. Was the one player who was able to check Josh Gibson in the one-on-one drill station. The defensive effort was aided by Trudeau’s physical profile. Has thick but but athletic upper body and is quick on his feet. Showed a confident stroke from beyond the arc. Also got out quickly and finished well in transition. St Clair went about four deep at the camp. I believe all of them were from the 2026 class. The future is beyond bright for the Saints
Xavier Challahan 6-7 2026 Richmond This young post just oozes upside and potential. The physical gifts are readily apparent. The only thing about him that looks like an underclassmen is his face. Everything else is fairly developed. Has a wide lower body that he uses well to establish deep position. The upper body isn’t as far along. However I would not call him slender. As he develops more muscle could really be a problem on the block. Reminds me a lot of fellow recent Thumb prospect Donovan McDonald at the same age. Showed a soft touch around the basket. Also did not have a lot of wasted motion in the process. Got it up to the rim quickly. Still has a ways to go in his development. But he is young and has a lot to work with already.
Justin Smalls Justin Smalls MI 5-7 2026 Richmond While Challahan is the future of the Blue Devils down low. Smalls showed potential as a quick point guard. I’ll avoid any lazy puns or jokes. But Smalls does not have a lot of size. He does have speed that he uses well. Is also fearless going to the basket. A good ball handler that attempted to get teammates involved in the scrimmages. Will team with Gregory Haskins Gregory Haskins MI . A similarly sized 2026 prospect to give Richmond a young but explosive backcourt in the next three years.
