Certainly, there are some teams with a lot more than three good players on a team, and there are other good trios to consider, but here is a look at four trios that will get you psyched up for the coming season:
Kapaun Mt. Carmel – Will Thengvall Will Thengvall 6'3" | SF Kapaun | 2024 State KS , Corbin Johnson Corbin Johnson 6'4" | PG Kapaun Mt Carmel | 2025 State KS , Teagan Charles Teagan Charles 6'5" | SF Kapaun | 2024 State KS :
The 5A state runner up returns a lot of firepower from last year. This trio includes two big forwards and a guy to get them the ball. Thengvall is versatile and skilled, able to handle the ball from end to end and create plays. Charles is also a big, skilled guy. He has a high ceiling that he hasn’t yet hit due to all the talent in the Crusader program. At guard, Kapaun features one of the fastest risers of last season in Johnson. He was a lights-out shooter and solid ball handler and passer with length at the guard spot.
Maize South – Jeron Askren Jeron Askren 6'3" | SG Maize South | 2024 State KS , Tory Homan Tory Homan 6'7" | C Maize South | 2024 State KS , Michael Kates Michael Kates 5'9" | PG Maize South | 2024 State KS :
Maize South is another state tournament team that returns a set of bigs and a top point guard. Homan and Askren are big powerhouses who can physically dominate in the paint and midrange. Kates has point guard skills displayed on the club scene and will assume a bigger role as a senior. This trio returns a ton of experience.
Bishop Carroll – Mikey Brand Mikey Brand 6'5" | SF Bishop Carroll | 2024 State KS , John Hauserman John Hauserman 6'3" | PF Bishop Carroll Catholic | 2024 State KS , Van Haneberg:
A very balanced trio returns at Bishop Carroll. Brand and Hauserman are versatile big men who can shoot, pass and bang in the paint. They both grabbed over 6 rebounds per game as juniors. Haneberg is a multi-sport stud and a shooting threat who stretches the defense. These three complement each other and share the ball, with each averaging more than 10 points as juniors.
Shawnee Heights – Brennon Dodge Brennon Dodge 6'1" | CG Shawnee Heights | 2024 State KS , Jaret Sanchez Jaret Sanchez 6'5" | SF Shawnee Heights | 2025 State KS , Ontarius Emmot Ontarius Emmot 6'3" | SF Shawnee Heights | 2026 State KS :
This is a trio under the radar. Dodge has carried a lot of weight as the T-Birds top offensive threat the past couple of years. But Sanchez took a big step forward last season as a big, powerful shooting threat from deep. He took some of the pressure off Dodge and allowed him to hunt for scoring opportunities. Now enter Emmot and the trio might just become diverse and dynamic. Emmot is a big, strong sophomore who got his feet wet as a freshman but may be ready for much bigger role. They might form a trio that can take Shawnee Heights to another level.
