There were a trio of talented Cajun state players who made the trip, along with a few from neighboring states to the north. Here’s five that showed out while in Oklahoma.
A competitive smaller guard, Hill showed the trademark “chip on his shoulder” aspects that often allows 6 foot and under guards to outplay their size. He was directing traffic, pushing it ahead to teammates in transition and an active menace on the defensive end (he ended one contest with an impressive steal and score). More than just a motor and leader type, Hill has a tight crossover and handle, that often allowed him to get good separation will pulling up from mid-range and three. His ability to be an effective off the dribble shooter is a good sign for to be an effective college floor general.
An industrious post prospect, Johnsen mixed a blue collar mentality when it came to challenging shots (even closing out to get a piece of a corner three attempt) with promise as a pick and pop weapon. He has a high release point on his jumper and looked comfortable, hitting from the mid-range and beyond the arc when given open shots. There’s always room at the next level for prospects with size, motor and upside as a floor spacer.
One of the top scorers at the event, Spiller has a college ready, well developed frame. He did a lot of his damage on drives, pushing the tempo in transition and navigating his way into good looks from the mid-range. It seemed like defenders would just bounce off him, leading to open looks at the rim. He even finished with a couple strong slams. When given opportunities to hit from distance, his range comfortably extended to the three point line. With good size, skill and offensive fill, the Missouri standout looks like a great target for college programs needing a polished off the ball scorer.
A physical guard, Cotton was strong when getting downhill at one point using a good spin move to create space for a runner type shot. He also understood spacing when moving to open spots as a perimeter shooter. Mix in some defensively intensity with a good block, and Cotton appears to be a great off the ball compliment to to his high school teammate, Hill.
Blessed with a big wingspan, Houston was an impactful player on both ends of the court. Offensively, he ran the floor hard to get transition opportunities, while also establishing deep around the basket in the half court. Playing with his high school point guard (Hill), Houston also got some opportunities to show off his promise as a roll man. On the defensive end, he had flashes of moving his feet well in coverage, one time leading to an emphatic block. The junior thanks to his combination of size, wingspan and mobility was one of the highest upside prospects at the event. Even potentially having a “D1” ceiling.
