Continue ReadingWe are currently in the process of updating our class rankings in the state of VA, so I thought it would be a fun time to look at who I would rank as the top 25 players regardless of class in the state. It’s a tough task as it involves looking at projections of younger players who still have a lot of growing and maturing to do versus older players who are more college ready now. However, it’s a fun way to look at and compare some of the top players across the state and their projections moving forward.
Obviously this is not perfect and a lot of things will change over the next few years, so let the debating begin!
* Side Note: We do our rankings as a team, while these are my personal opinions. Not everything will align with our last rankings or our future rankings moving forward.
5) Darren Harris Darren Harris 6'6" | SF Paul VI | 2024 State #59 Nation VA | 6’6” WG | Paul VI 2024
Harris has been one of the top wings in the country over the past few years, and the Duke commit has proved time and time again that he’s one of the best shooters I’ve seen in my time scouting high school basketball. The 6’6” wing has prototypical size to play at the highest of levels, and his ability to relocate and set his feet on the move coupled with a lightning quick release and the ability to knock it down well past the NBA line makes him an absolutely deadly weapon. He’s rounded his game out nicely over his career getting his body right and becoming more athletic to make plays on both ends of the floor, and he shows a competitive chip to his game that allows him to make big plays against the best of the best.
4) Patrick Ngongba | 6’10” C | Paul VI 2024
Ngongba has developed steadily over the past few years since he was a freshman at Highland, and it all came to flourishing this summer with Team Takeover as he dominated the EYBL helping them win Peach Jam and becoming one of the top players in the country during it. Over the years we’ve seen Ngonba grow both physically and within his game, as he has developed his body nicely and is strong enough to clear out space in the paint but he’s also shown the ability to step out on the perimeter and knock down shots consistently now. He has terrific touch with both hands around the rim, he challenges shots without fouling, he’s always around the ball and is a good rebounder and he’s highly efficient with his touches as both a scorer and a distributor.
3) Latrell Allmond Latrell Allmond 6'8" | C John Marshall | 2026 State VA | 6’8” PF | John Marshall 2026
As of right now the 2026 class in VA looks very impressive despite them being very young, and Allmond is at the top of the class as he had a great freshman season with John Marshall’s nationally ranked group last year and has impressed at multiple national stops including USA basketball. The 6’8” forward doesn’t play like a rising sophomore as he can physically dominate older post players, and with his high motor and athleticism in the paint he’s very productive and efficient in a lot of different ways. He’s a big time rebounder on both ends of the floor, he plays above the rim with authority, he is mobile and runs the floor well and he has shown mismatch ability as he can step out and make shots and put it on the deck too.
2) Nate Ament Nate Ament 6'8" | SF Highland | 2025 State #12 Nation VA | 6’8” WF | Highland School 2025
Ament came from relative obscurity after his freshman year to make a name for himself heading into his sophomore season, and over the summer he rose to occasion and became a national name who is being recruited by high major programs across the country. The 6’8” wing has such a unique skillset and is a walking mismatch due to his size and ball skills, as he can handle the ball both in transition and in the half court and has three level scoring ability off the bounce. He has a quick release with little load off the catch and his length allows him to get clean looks without a lot of space, he has good length to rebound and challenge shots and he’s crafty in the paint and gets to the line often.
1) Bryson Tucker | 6’7” WF | Bishop O’Connell 2024
Tucker announced his transfer to O’Connell a couple of weeks ago and the former Mount St. Joseph’s and Montverde star becomes the best player in VA as he’s one of the top players in the country and has had success on the national level including USA basketball for years now. From early in his career it was easy to see why Tucker would be one of the best players in the country, as he has a lot of point guard like qualities in a big frame that will translate easily to the next level. He handles the ball like a lead guard with good pace and shift off the bounce, and he can get to spots effortlessly where he can use his size to rise up and knock down shots over defenders. He has a great midrange game and the ability to get all the way to the cup and finish through traffic, he can make plays for others off the bounce and he can plug and play into different positions and different roles with his size and skillset.
