Now that I’ve spent four days in Fort Mill getting to watch some of the best players from independent programs all around the region play extensively, I’ve been able to see many awesome talents our state holds. Check out some of my top 2024 prospects from action this weekend from the Phenom Summer Havoc.
Steinback continued to impress for his MidState Magic group as a tweener forward with a ton of athleticism and rim protection potential, but also expanding his offensive game since I’ve seen him last. Defensively he’s all the things you ask for; a great rim protector, rebounder, and paint defender. It comes from his lateral athleticism, 6’7 frame, and defensive IQ. On offense he makes things happen both as an off ball cutter and rim runner, but also with the ball in his hands. He showed off some extended range around the arc and ability to make plays off the bounce. He’s going to be an intriguing prospect for JuCos and NAIAs to get eyes on because he’s improving rapidly.
Moye isn’t going to wow you with leaping ability or shiftiness, but his polished scoring game and physical toughness are hallmarks of a game destined for the college level. He made a lot of nice plays around the rim, using his strong frame and tendency to embrace contact to either finish through contact or take himself to the free throw line. Shot the ball decently on the weekend but usually is a great shooter. Also has a lot of emotional toughness and intangibles many college coaches are looking for from their recruits. Moye’s recruitment should be ticking up quickly as a guy who does everything you ask of him.
Bailey is one of those guys that is incredibly difficult to defend due to his unique 6’4 frame that also holds plenty of strength and weight. He moves well, attacks the rim and mid-range, and will also shoot a perimeter jumper at a solid clip. Guards aren’t ideal to defend him because they get buried in the paint, and bigs can’t compete with him laterally on the perimeter. He needs to continue working on his aggression and taking what is his, exploiting those mismatches more often, but that kind of frame with the offensive abilities he has is not common. Expect for him to have a big senior year.
Ware is developing immensely as a forward that can play inside and out for his Strong Center group. He hit some big shots from the perimeter, making him someone that could be useful in the pick and pop game and as a general floor spacer at the next level. He has good touch in the post and paint, where he’s active moving and has good hands. On the other end he’ll make contributions as a rebounder and defender, and is switchable onto guards at some points, increasing his versatility. He is getting more and more dynamic by the week, making him someone who should see a big jump in production in the SWAC this year.
Boyce had a big weekend shooting the ball and otherwise giving defenses major issues for Team Synergy . He had multiple big games including a 33 point outing, and showed why he can be trusted as a shooter and a scorer. He’s lights out from beyond the arc, whether thats on the catch or creating for himself off the dribble. If run off the line, he can get to a pull up or even attack the rim if he has open space. Defensively he gets the job done with a strong frame, unable to be bullied off his line. His scoring potential should make him a name to know in the Charlotte region and get some more eyes on this summer/fall.
